Ahmedabad hosted the First World Yogasana Championship 2026, a landmark event inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The championship brought together athletes from various countries and marked a significant step toward establishing Yogasana as a globally recognised competitive sport. Ahmedabad was chosen as the host city due to its cultural and historical importance as India’s first UNESCO World Heritage City. The event was organised ahead of International Yoga Day 2026 and aimed to promote yoga beyond wellness by showcasing its potential as a competitive discipline. It also highlighted India’s efforts to popularise yoga on the international stage and encourage global participation in Yogasana.

India and the United Kingdom jointly launched the Critical Minerals Global Supply Chain Observatory (GSCO) to enhance cooperation in securing critical mineral supply chains. These minerals are essential for electric vehicle batteries, renewable energy systems, semiconductors, defence technologies, and advanced electronics. The initiative aims to provide real-time market intelligence, monitor supply chain risks, identify geopolitical vulnerabilities, and support evidence-based policymaking. Developed through collaboration between institutions such as IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, TEXMiN, and the University of Cambridge, the observatory aligns with India’s National Critical Mineral Mission and supports long-term resource security, clean energy transitions, and sustainable industrial growth.

Microsoft unveiled the Fairwater AI Data Centre in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, as part of its efforts to develop sustainable artificial intelligence infrastructure. The facility spans approximately 315 acres and represents an investment of about $7.3 billion. One of its most significant innovations is a closed-loop cooling system that recycles the same water continuously after an initial filling, greatly reducing freshwater consumption. The data centre also uses a two-storey vertical design to improve efficiency and reduce land requirements. Through this project, Microsoft aims to address environmental concerns associated with AI infrastructure while supporting the growing demand for advanced computing power.

Veteran Diplomat Vipul, a 1998-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. Before this appointment, he was serving as India’s Ambassador to Qatar and had previously held several important diplomatic positions, including Consul General of India in Dubai and Joint Secretary (Gulf) in the Ministry of External Affairs. With nearly three decades of diplomatic experience and deep expertise in Gulf affairs, Vipul is expected to play a significant role in strengthening India’s relations with Saudi Arabia in areas such as energy, trade, investment, defence cooperation, and regional security.

Lokhande Prashant Sitaram, a 2001-batch AGMUT cadre IAS officer, has been appointed as the new Chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Prior to this appointment, he served as Additional Secretary in the Department of Home under the Ministry of Home Affairs. His appointment comes at a significant time when CBSE’s On-Screen Marking (OSM) system is facing scrutiny over complaints related to evaluation discrepancies, technical issues, and delays in verification. The leadership change is aimed at strengthening the administration of CBSE, one of the largest education boards in the world, which conducts Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations.

Delcy Rodríguez, the Acting President of Venezuela, visited India from June 3 to June 7, 2026, as part of an official diplomatic engagement aimed at strengthening bilateral relations. The visit focused on key sectors such as energy, trade, technology, investment, scientific research, and infrastructure. She was accompanied by a high-level delegation that included several cabinet ministers. During the visit, discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Indian leaders were expected to cover bilateral cooperation, global energy markets, trade opportunities, South-South cooperation, and other issues of mutual interest.

Cambodia has become the latest country to accept India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) through a partnership between NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and ACLEDA Bank Plc. This initiative allows Indian travellers to make secure and instant QR-code-based payments using their existing UPI applications at over 4.5 million merchant locations across Cambodia. The integration uses Cambodia’s KHQR network, powered by the Bakong digital payment system, making transactions more convenient for tourists and business travellers. The partnership also aims to establish a two-way payment corridor in the future, enabling Cambodian users to make payments in India through their domestic digital payment platforms.

Neelkanth Mishra, a distinguished economist and policy expert, has been appointed as India’s next Executive Director at the World Bank. He will represent the South Asian constituency comprising India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka for a three-year term. Before this appointment, he served as Chief Economist at Axis Bank and held several important positions, including membership in the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, UIDAI, and TRAI. With extensive experience in economic research, financial markets, and public policy, Mishra is expected to strengthen India’s voice in international economic decision-making and contribute significantly to discussions at the World Bank.

Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary, popularly known as Surha Tal, became India’s 100th Ramsar Site on World Environment Day 2026. Located in the Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh, the sanctuary is an ecologically significant wetland that supports a wide variety of migratory and resident bird species. Its recognition under the Ramsar Convention highlights its international importance for biodiversity conservation and sustainable wetland management. The sanctuary contributes to maintaining ecological balance by supporting aquatic life, regulating water systems, and providing breeding and feeding habitats for birds. This achievement also reflects India’s growing commitment to environmental conservation and wetland protection.

World Environment Day 2026 is observed on June 5, continuing a global tradition that began in 1973 following its establishment by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. Celebrated annually, it serves as the world's largest platform for environmental awareness and action. The 2026 theme, “Inspired by Nature: For Climate. For Our Future.”, emphasises climate action, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable living. Hosted by Azerbaijan, the event brings together governments, organisations, businesses, and citizens to address pressing environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and deforestation while encouraging collective responsibility for protecting the planet.

Bengaluru, the capital city of Karnataka, has been chosen as the location for the University of Liverpool’s first campus in India. The university received official approval from the Ministry of Education under the framework of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages reputed foreign universities to establish campuses in India. The initiative is expected to enhance access to global-quality education, promote international research collaborations, improve student mobility, and strengthen academic competitiveness. The new campus also represents a significant step in deepening India–UK educational cooperation and advancing the internationalisation of India’s higher education system.
