Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu will host the 31st Southern Zonal Council meeting on August 20, 2026. The meeting will be chaired by Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah and organised by the Inter-State Council Secretariat under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Representatives from southern states and Union Territories are expected to participate and discuss issues concerning regional coordination and development. The Southern Zonal Council is one of India’s five Zonal Councils, established under Sections 15 to 22 of the States Reorganisation Act, 1956. Qatar Post partnered with India Post to launch the PosTransfer remittance service on August 15, 2026, enabling customers in Qatar to transfer money directly to UPI-enabled accounts in India. The service operates through Qatar Post outlets and uses the recipient’s UPI ID. The initiative involves the Universal Postal Union’s Interconnection Platform and NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL). Transactions can range from QAR 10 to QAR 4,000, with a maximum equivalent of ₹1 lakh per transaction and a flat service fee of QAR 15. The service creates a digital remittance corridor for the Indian diaspora in Qatar.

New Delhi hosted the opening of the 65th Subroto Cup International Football Tournament 2026, which began on August 18, 2026. The opening ceremony was held at Dr B.R. Ambedkar Stadium and featured Air Marshal S Sivakumar as the Chief Guest and weightlifter Lovepreet Singh as the Guest of Honour. Lucknow was the city where Kawa UAV Pvt. Ltd. (HoverIt) successfully conducted the maiden flight of Divyastra Mk3 on August 11, 2026. Developed as India’s first indigenous jet-powered loitering munition, Divyastra Mk3 uses a jet engine developed by DG Propulsion and contains no imported foreign engines or critical subsystems. Kawa UAV, an indigenous defence technology firm based in Lucknow, specialises in high-speed precision strike systems and UAVs The successful flight demonstrates India’s growing capabilities in developing advanced, self-reliant defence technologies under the broader objective of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Meghalaya was the location of the Centre of Excellence for Eri Weaving, inaugurated by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on August 18, 2026. The centre was established at Ri Sai, Nongpoh, as part of the Integrated Textile Tourism Complex. Its primary objective is to preserve and promote traditional Eri weaving skills while creating sustainable opportunities for weavers, spinners, and silkworm rearers. Eri silk, also known as Ahimsa Silk or Peace Silk, is produced without killing the silkworm. Meghalaya is a major producer of Eri silk in North East India.

10.3% was the increase in gross loans of Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) during FY 2025-26. Their gross loans outstanding rose from ₹5.24 lakh crore in the previous financial year to ₹5.78 lakh crore. The growth reflects increased financing support for rural entrepreneurship, micro enterprises, agriculture, MSMEs, and weaker sections. RRBs also achieved an average of 91.7% against the Priority Sector Lending target, which is statutorily fixed at 75% of Adjusted Net Bank Credit. The expansion highlights the important role of RRBs in strengthening rural credit availability and supporting economic development in rural areas.

August 20 is observed annually as Indian Akshay Urja Day, also known as Renewable Energy Day, in India. August 19 is observed globally as World Humanitarian Day (WHD) to honour humanitarian workers and promote the protection of aid personnel under International Humanitarian Law (IHL). The day commemorates the August 19, 2003 suicide truck bombing at the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, which targeted the United Nations headquarters and killed 22 humanitarian workers. The United Nations General Assembly designated the observance through Resolution A/RES/63/139, adopted on December 11, 2008. The first official World Humanitarian Day was observed on August 19, 2009. The 2026 campaign uses the official slogan #ActForHumanity.

Hakainde Hichilema was re-elected as the President of Zambia for a second consecutive five-year term on August 13, 2026. Representing the United Party for National Development (UPND), he secured 2,965,326 votes, accounting for approximately 61.4% of the total votes cast. The election was conducted under Zambia’s constitutional 50% + 1 majority rule, requiring a candidate to obtain more than half of the votes to avoid a second-round run-off. Hichilema’s new presidential term will span from 2026 to 2031. Zambia’s capital is Lusaka, and its currency is the Zambian Kwacha.

August 20 is observed annually as World Mosquito Day to raise awareness about mosquito-borne diseases and their prevention. The day commemorates the important discovery made by British-Indian physician and scientist Sir Ronald Ross in 1897, when he demonstrated that malaria is transmitted through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. World Mosquito Day highlights the health risks associated with diseases such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, and Zika virus. It also encourages communities to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, avoid stagnant water, use protective measures, and cooperate with public health agencies to reduce mosquito-borne disease transmission.
