Lakshmanan Meyyappan became the world’s youngest male Chartered Accountant at the age of 16 years and 141 days, earning recognition from Guinness World Records in Dubai. His interest in accounting developed during the COVID-19 pandemic after completing his Class 10 examinations. Inspired by his mother, an ACCA-qualified professional, he pursued the ACCA qualification and completed it in about one year. He later obtained the CFA charter and began pursuing an MSc in Finance. He also works as a Senior Research Analyst at Century Financial in Dubai, focusing on investment research and financial analysis.

Karnataka approved the Sandhya Kiran cashless healthcare scheme on August 14, 2026, to provide financial and medical security to state government pensioners and their families. The scheme initially covers around 4.93 lakh beneficiaries, including approximately 3.11 lakh state government pensioners below 70 years, along with family pensioners and eligible dependents. It provides cashless treatment of up to ₹5 lakh per year on a family floater basis at empanelled hospitals. The scheme is implemented under Ayushman Bharat-Arogya Karnataka regulations and managed by the Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust.

Maharashtra declared snakebite a notifiable disease, effective from August 18, 2026, making the reporting of suspected and confirmed snakebite cases and related deaths compulsory. Healthcare institutions and professionals are required to report cases to the concerned district health authorities through systems such as the Health Management Information System (HMIS) and Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP). The measure aims to strengthen disease surveillance, ensure timely treatment, and improve planning for anti-snake venom (ASV) availability. The state has also emphasised the importance of receiving treatment within the “golden hour” of 60 minutes after a snakebite.

Semicon India 2026, the fifth edition of India’s major semiconductor industry event, will be held at Yashoobhoomi (IICC), Dwarka, New Delhi, from September 17 to 19, 2026. The event will showcase India’s expanding semiconductor ecosystem and is expected to feature more than 500 exhibitors, over 290 international companies, more than 150 speakers, and delegations from over 40 countries. Pune will host the BRICS ICT Track 2026 from August 17 to 21, organised by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) as part of India’s BRICS Chairship. Ind-Ra has raised its forecast for India’s GDP growth in FY27 to 6.8%, up from its earlier estimate of 6.7%. The revision is mainly attributed to lower crude oil prices, with the agency reducing its baseline crude oil price assumption from $95 to $85 per barrel. However, Ind-Ra highlighted several risks, including El Niño conditions, high inflation, geopolitical tensions in West Asia, weak global trade, and unfavourable agricultural conditions. The projected growth remains below the 7.6% growth rate given in the provisional FY26 estimates by the National Statistical Office.

Razorpay launched Vulcan, India’s first transformer-based AI foundation model specifically designed for payments, on August 18, 2026. The model was developed in collaboration with NVIDIA and Amazon Web Services (AWS) using the Amazon SageMaker platform. Vulcan is designed to improve payment reliability, fraud detection, and transaction routing across India’s digital payments ecosystem. It increased payment success rates by up to 10% and detected eight times more international card fraud. The model was tested and deployed across approximately 3 trillion data points on Razorpay’s payments network, demonstrating the growing role of artificial intelligence in strengthening digital payment security and efficiency.

Meine Electric launched a utility-scale pilot of its indigenous iron-air battery technology at the NTPC Simhadri Thermal Power Station on August 17, 2026. The project is being executed by the Atal Incubation Centre–Anna University, with Meine Electric serving as the technology partner. The battery features a six-hour charging cycle followed by an 18-hour discharge cycle and is designed for long-duration energy storage. The pilot aims to evaluate technical performance and operational reliability under real-world utility conditions while supporting 24x7 clean power and greater grid flexibility. Iron-air batteries use iron, oxygen, and water through a reversible rusting process.

210 Indian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) received UN Medals for their exceptional service. The ceremony was held in Juba and recognised their contributions during crises, medical emergencies, and lifesaving missions. Among the recipients were six women peacekeepers and seven staff officers. India has a long-standing role in UN peacekeeping operations and is one of the largest providers of military and police personnel to UN missions. As of April 2026, India was also the top troop contributor to UNMISS, with 1,775 Indian military personnel deployed in South Sudan.

Tamil Nadu announced an extension of maternity leave to 365 days for women government employees having a third child, replacing the earlier entitlement of 12 weeks for employees with two or more surviving children. The decision is aimed at promoting women’s empowerment and social welfare. Tamil Nadu has progressively increased maternity leave benefits over the years, from 90 days in 2011 to six months, then nine months in 2016, and 365 days in 2021 for employees with fewer than two surviving children. A government order will provide detailed implementation guidelines and eligibility conditions for the new third-child provision.
