Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu will host the 31st Southern Zonal Council meeting on August 20, 2026. The meeting will be chaired by Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah and organised by the Inter-State Council Secretariat under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Representatives from southern states and Union Territories are expected to participate and discuss issues concerning regional coordination and development. The Southern Zonal Council is one of India’s five Zonal Councils, established under Sections 15 to 22 of the States Reorganisation Act, 1956. These councils provide a platform for strengthening coordination between states and the Centre and promoting cooperative federalism.
