Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected as the 23rd President of Bangladesh after securing 255 votes in the parliamentary election held on August 20, 2026. His opponent, Oli Ahmed, received 88 votes. The election was significant as it was Bangladesh’s first contested presidential election in 35 years, with more than one candidate competing. Alamgir, a senior Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader and former Secretary General, transitioned from party politics to the country’s highest constitutional position. He succeeded Mohammed Shahabuddin, who resigned on July 24, 2026, citing ill health.

IIT Bombay partnered with Tata Power through a Master Research Agreement (MRA) signed on August 17, 2026. The collaboration focuses on developing and commercialising next-generation clean energy technologies. Key research areas include smart grids, power electronics, energy storage, electric mobility, AI for power systems, digital grid technologies, cybersecurity, carbon capture, and the circular economy. Tamil Nadu increased the annual health insurance coverage under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh on August 19, 2026. The five-fold increase is aimed at strengthening the state’s healthcare system and improving access to quality medical treatment for people across different income groups and geographical locations. The state also announced an extension of maternity leave for women employees for the third child from 12 weeks to 365 days, matching the duration available for the first two children. Additionally, official vehicles and monthly allowances were proposed for MLAs to help them address public grievances and monitor development projects.

RK-251 is a smart cancer drug developed through collaborative research led by the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati, and IIT-Guwahati. The drug is designed to selectively activate inside cancer cells by responding to high levels of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), which are more abundant in such cells. Once activated, RK-251 releases the anticancer compound NBDHEX. The drug demonstrated high efficacy against triple-negative breast cancer, an aggressive form of the disease. Preclinical testing using zebrafish embryos showed zero toxicity, while fluorescence helped monitor drug activation in ROS-rich environments.

Chhattisgarh signed an agreement with Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN) on August 19, 2026, to implement the Amended BharatNet Program (ABP) under a State-led model. The project will be executed through Chhattisgarh State BharatNet Infrastructure Limited (CSBIL), with ₹3,942 crore in financial support approved by the Government of India. The program aims to cover 11,682 Gram Panchayats and provide connectivity to 8,328 villages on a demand basis. It also targets more than three lakh rural home fibre connections, supporting telemedicine, e-Governance, online education, and digital payments in remote areas.

Japan signed a Memorandum of Arrangement with India on August 20, 2026, to strengthen Maritime Security Cooperation. Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi held a bilateral meeting in New Delhi for the agreement. The cooperation covers Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA), Search and Rescue (SAR), and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR). The UNICORN integrated communications antenna system was also finalised as the first defence equipment transfer project between the two countries. India and Japan also conduct exercises such as Veer Guardian, Dharma Guardian, and JAIMEX to enhance military interoperability and strategic cooperation.

Bengaluru is the city where QpiAI inaugurated its 8-inch quantum foundry on August 19, 2026. The facility is located within a newly opened 70,000 sq ft R&D centre and is designed for semiconductor-scale manufacturing of advanced quantum processors. It aims to produce processors containing up to 10,000 physical qubits, a major increase from QpiAI’s existing 128-qubit capability. The facility will support the mass production of quantum processors for high-performance computing and the development of specialised quantum-AI solutions. Bengaluru, Karnataka, is also the headquarters of QpiAI, a full-stack quantum computing startup.

West Bengal hosted its first-ever Kaushal Mahotsav in Balurghat on August 19, 2026, organised by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) in collaboration with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and the state government. The event aimed to provide employment opportunities to the youth of Dakshin Dinajpur. India’s unemployment rate for individuals aged 15 years and above declined to 5.1% in July 2026, compared with 5.5% in June 2026, according to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) Monthly Bulletin released by the National Statistics Office (NSO). The decline was accompanied by improvements in labour market indicators. The overall Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) increased to 55.4%, while the Worker Population Ratio (WPR) rose to 52.5%. Rural unemployment also decreased to 4.5%. The survey used the Current Weekly Status (CWS) approach for estimating employment and unemployment conditions.
