Sagarmala Finance is set to launch India’s maiden blue bond issue on September 28, 2026. Sagarmala Finance Corporation plans to raise ₹600 crore through 10-year bonds, with an additional ₹500 crore available through the greenshoe option. The funds will be used to support maritime-sector projects, including greenfield port facilities and coastal road networks. Blue bonds are financial instruments designed to finance projects connected with the sustainability and preservation of marine and water resources. The issue has received an AA+ rating from ICRA and CARE, while SBI Capital Markets will act as the arranger for the bond issuance.

October 20, 2026, is the date on which the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will come into effect. The agreement was signed on April 27, 2026, by India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and New Zealand Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay in New Delhi. Under the agreement, New Zealand will provide duty-free access to Indian exports across 100% of tariff lines from the start. The FTA also covers services, investment, professional mobility and education, while India has protected sensitive sectors such as dairy, livestock, agriculture, sugar and edible oils.

Jayanti Prasad has taken additional charge as the Chairperson of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) with effect from September 13, 2026. He was already serving as a Whole-Time Member of IBBI and assumed the additional responsibility following the retirement of former Chairperson Ravi Mital. His additional charge is scheduled to continue until November 20, 2026, when his tenure as a Whole-Time Member ends, or until a new Chairperson assumes office, whichever occurs earlier. IBBI regulates India’s insolvency and bankruptcy framework under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016.

Karnataka will host the inaugural AIFF U15 Women’s Youth League, with all matches scheduled at the Sporting Planet Sports Complex in Belagavi. The tournament is set to begin on October 15, 2026, and the final will be played on October 31, 2026. A total of 16 teams from across India will participate, divided into four groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals, followed by the semi-finals. Belgaum United Football Academy has been designated as the host team for this inaugural edition of the women’s youth football competition.

Accenture’s specialised AI business, Faculty, will lead the strategic partnership with Anthropic to evaluate and red-team advanced AI models. Announced on September 20, 2026, the partnership involves a combined investment of $2 billion over five years, with both companies contributing at least $1 billion each. The initiative will focus on alignment assessments, testing model safeguards, monitoring potential risks from AI agents and publishing reports on unexpected or concerning model behaviour. The partnership also includes an independent “vantage point” system, allowing evaluators to work inside AI companies with employee-level access to strengthen AI safety and reliability.

2032 is the year until which the Cooperative Agreement between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the European Space Agency (ESA) has been extended. The agreement remains valid until January 8, 2032. The extension was formalised through an exchange of letters in Paris on September 10, 2026, during the International Space Summit. It strengthens cooperation in areas such as human and robotic space exploration, Earth observation, space weather, navigation, space science, mission support and sustainable outer space activities. The original agreement came into force in January 2002.

New Delhi is hosting the 9th India International Water Week (IIWW) 2026. The event is being held at Bharat Mandapam from September 22 to 26, 2026, under the theme “Climate Resilient Water Management.” The Ministry of Jal Shakti is the lead organiser, in collaboration with other central ministries and state governments. The event includes 10 major forums and focuses on seven key sub-themes, including water governance, innovative financing models and climate-related risks. The Netherlands and Germany are partner countries, while 14 Indian states and six central ministries or departments are participating. A parallel International WASH Conference is also being held.

Chennai will be the location of Starbucks’ first Global Capability Centre (GCC) in India. Starbucks Coffee has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government through Guidance Tamil Nadu to establish the technology and global capability hub. The centre is expected to create around 800 high-value technology jobs in its first phase. It will support Starbucks’ global operations through functions such as software development, finance, product development and research. The Chennai GCC will operate independently of Starbucks’ existing Indian retail joint venture with Tata Consumer Products, further strengthening Chennai’s position as a major GCC destination.

Uttarakhand is hosting the 18th edition of the Nomadic Elephant 2026 military exercise between India and Mongolia. The exercise began at the Foreign Training Node in Pithoragarh and will continue until October 3, 2026. It involves 45 troops each from the Indian Army and the Mongolian Armed Forces. The platoon-level exercise focuses on enhancing joint operational capabilities in counter-insurgency operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrains under the United Nations mandate. Training activities include cordon and search operations, room intervention drills, heliborne operations, cyber security, drone operations and counter-drone systems, strengthening tactical coordination and interoperability between the two forces.

Tajikistan hosted the 25th Meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Ministers responsible for Foreign Economic and Trade activities. The meeting was held in Dushanbe on September 17, 2026. India was represented by Shri Yashvir Singh, who highlighted the vision of Security, Connectivity, and Opportunity for international trade. The meeting adopted important documents, including the Action Plan for 2026–2030 on multilateral trade and economic cooperation and a joint statement on foreign economic and trade activities. Discussions also focused on resilient supply chains, trade finance for MSMEs and start-ups, digitalisation, paperless trade and cooperation in critical sectors.

September 22 is observed annually as World Rhino Day to raise global awareness about rhinoceros conservation. The observance highlights the need to protect the world’s five surviving rhino species from major threats such as poaching, illegal rhino-horn trade and habitat loss. World Rhino Day was first announced by WWF-South Africa in 2010 and became an international observance in 2011. The 2026 theme is “Keep the Five Alive,” emphasising the protection of viable rhino populations and their habitats. The International Rhino Foundation estimates the global rhino population at approximately 26,700.
