India and Sudan conducted the ninth round of Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) in Port Sudan on May 4, 2026, to review and strengthen bilateral relations. The discussions covered areas such as trade, energy, mining, agriculture, digital infrastructure, and capacity building. Both countries also emphasised cooperation in counter-terrorism and human resource development through programs like ITEC and ICCR scholarships. Sudan condemned the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, reflecting support for security cooperation with India. The meeting further reinforced diplomatic engagement between the two nations, and it was decided that the next round of consultations would be hosted in New Delhi.

Kumar Mangalam Birla was appointed as the non-executive chairman of Vodafone Idea Limited, succeeding Ravinder Takkar. Prior to this elevation, he served as a non-executive director on the company’s board. The leadership transition was approved by the board and disclosed under Regulation 30 of the SEBI Listing Regulations, ensuring regulatory compliance and transparency. Ravinder Takkar stepped down from the chairman position and assumed the role of non-executive vice-chairman to maintain continuity in leadership. Vodafone Idea, formed through the merger of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular in 2018, is one of India’s leading telecommunications service providers with headquarters in Mumbai and Gandhinagar.

The second edition of WAVES Doc Bazaar will be hosted in Mumbai from June 16 to June 18, 2026, at the NFDC Complex alongside the 19th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF). The event is designed to support documentary, animation, and short filmmakers by providing them with mentorship, networking opportunities, and international market exposure. Shashi Shekhar Vempati was appointed as the new Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) by the Government of India on May 6, 2026. He succeeded Prasoon Joshi, who stepped down after being elevated as the Chairman of Prasar Bharati. Vempati will serve a three-year term from the date of assuming office. The CBFC functions under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and is responsible for regulating the public exhibition of films in India under the Cinematograph Act, 1952. Originally established as the Central Board of Film Censors in 1951, the CBFC is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

India and Algeria held their inaugural Joint Commission meeting in New Delhi on May 05, 2026, to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation. The meeting was co-chaired by senior defence officials from both countries and focused on expanding collaboration in military training, joint exercises, defence industries, and medical cooperation. Both sides signed the Rules of Procedure to establish a structured framework for implementing defence initiatives. Algeria, the largest country in Africa by land area, continues to play an important role in India’s outreach to African nations.

Mizoram and Ladakh signed reform-linked agreements with the Ministry of Jal Shakti on May 06, 2026, for the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0. The mission aims to provide sustainable and community-led rural drinking water systems under the vision of “Har Ghar Jal” by 2028. Mizoram achieved near-complete progress in water supply schemes and established multiple testing laboratories, while Ladakh recorded over 98% Functional Household Tap Connection coverage in rural areas. The agreements also emphasise the role of Village Water and Sanitation Committees, community participation, and convergence with schemes like MGNREGA to ensure long-term sustainability of rural water infrastructure.

The Union Government officially notified the creation of the South Coast Railway (SCoR) zone with its headquarters in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The new railway zone will become operational from June 1, 2026, and has been formed by reorganising parts of the East Coast Railway and South Central Railway under the Railways Act, 1989. The restructuring includes divisions such as Guntakal, Guntur, Vijayawada, and the reorganised Visakhapatnam division. The establishment of the new zone is aimed at improving operational efficiency, strengthening freight and passenger connectivity, and supporting regional infrastructure development across Andhra Pradesh and nearby regions.

Coal India Limited (CIL), a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Coal, commissioned a 100 MW solar power project in Gujarat with effect from March 31, 2026. The project received its official commissioning certificate from the Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA). This initiative is part of CIL’s broader strategy to diversify into renewable energy and move toward becoming a net-zero energy company. The New Delhi Government approved a significant salary hike for Vocational and Samagra Shiksha teachers to strengthen the education system and support contractual educators. Vocational teachers will now receive ₹38,100 per month, while Samagra Shiksha teachers will receive ₹35,420 per month, bringing them closer to the salary structure of regular teaching staff. The policy benefits more than 1,100 vocational teachers and educators working in hundreds of Special Training Centres. The initiative aims to improve teacher retention, reduce financial insecurity, and ensure better academic support for school dropouts so they can successfully reintegrate into the formal education system under the Samagra Shiksha framework.

India and Vietnam held bilateral discussions in New Delhi and agreed to achieve a bilateral trade target of $25 billion by 2030 under their enhanced comprehensive strategic partnership. The talks focused on expanding trade, improving agricultural market access, and strengthening defence cooperation. Both countries granted access for products such as Indian grapes and Vietnamese durians while also working toward faster clearances for other agricultural goods. They additionally agreed to establish a 2+2 Dialogue mechanism involving foreign and defence ministries. The discussions also emphasised the early review and implementation of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) to further strengthen economic integration and regional cooperation.
