August 30 is observed as National Small Industry Day in India to recognise the important contribution of small-scale enterprises to manufacturing, employment, industrial development, and economic growth. The observance commemorates the launch of a comprehensive policy package for the small-scale sector on August 30, 2000. Small industries contribute over 30% of the country’s total national output and play a significant role in promoting the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. The National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC), established in 1955 under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, supports the sector through training, capacity building, and other specialised programs.

Uzbekistan awarded Prime Minister Narendra Modi its highest honour, the Oliy Darajali Do‘stlik Order, during his visit to Tashkent on August 30, 2026. The honour, meaning “Order of Supreme Friendship,” recognises friendship and international cooperation. Modi dedicated the award to the people of India, India’s rich heritage, and the historic friendship between India and Uzbekistan. During the visit, the two countries also upgraded their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and agreed on long-term uranium supplies to India. Red Hexagonal is the proposed warning label shape for HFSS (High Fat, Sugar, and Salt) packaged foods under the FSSAI’s compliance proposal submitted to the Supreme Court on August 28, 2026. The warning would apply when a product is high in at least two of three specified nutrients: added sugar, added salt, or added saturated fat. The proposed label would be one point larger than the back-of-pack nutrition information and displayed in both Hindi and English. The framework is aligned with the ICMR-NIN Dietary Guidelines 2024 and uses the HFSS definition from earlier regulatory proposals and parliamentary discussions.

Ecuador declared a nationwide red alert on August 29, 2026, due to the increasing risks associated with the ongoing El Nino phenomenon. The country’s Ministry of Risk Management issued the alert as authorities prepared for possible droughts, wildfires, and other climate-related disruptions. Particular concern was raised over drought and wildfire risks in the Amazon region. The emergency declaration enables authorities to take precautionary measures, including preventive evacuations if necessary. El Nino can cause abnormal weather patterns worldwide by altering atmospheric circulation, resulting in droughts in some regions and heavy rainfall in others.

Tamil Nadu notified three new elephant corridors in the Cauvery North Wildlife Sanctuary on August 28, 2026, to facilitate elephant movement between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The corridors are located in the Hosur Forest Division and support trans-Cauvery migration. The three corridors are Jawalagiri-Ulibanda-Thaggatti, Jawalagiri-Panai-Anchetty, and Bilikkal-Jawalagiri. All three are situated entirely within Reserved Forest boundaries, meaning no revenue villages or private lands are affected. Elephant corridors are important for connecting habitats, maintaining genetic diversity, and reducing human-wildlife conflict. The Cauvery North Wildlife Sanctuary also serves as a vital link between Karnataka’s Bannerghatta National Park and the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary.

Himachal Pradesh unveiled its first ozone-based drinking water treatment project in Dehra, located in Kangra district. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced ₹46 crore for the project, which uses ozone gas to disinfect water and improve its taste. The initiative aims to strengthen drinking water infrastructure and is expected to be extended to other parts of the state after its implementation in Dehra. The project is part of the government’s broader efforts to improve public services and local development. Other announcements included welfare schemes, forest conservation initiatives, new CBSE schools, and a veterinary hospital in Baddal Thor.

Venezuela holds the world’s largest proven oil reserves, estimated at more than 300 billion barrels. On August 29, 2026, the United States secured majority control over 65 billion barrels of proven Venezuelan oil reserves through a historic agreement. The deal aims to provide US refineries with stable, low-cost crude supplies while enabling long-term access for American companies to Venezuelan oilfields. IIT Madras launched Phiball, an innovative three-team variant of basketball, on August 29, 2026, coinciding with the eve of National Sports Day. Designed by Prof. Sathyanarayana N. Gummadi, Dean of Students at IIT Madras, Phiball combines elements of basketball and netball and is played on a circular 26-metre-diameter court with three goal posts. The game has unique rules, including a 24-second shot clock, a maximum of three dribbles per possession, and a restricted no-offence zone beneath the rim. The name Phiball is inspired by the Golden Ratio, approximately 1.618. The sport is also designed to be affordable and accessible for grassroots participation.

Sri Lanka lost the hosting rights for the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 following concerns over the autonomy and governance of Sri Lanka Cricket. The tournament was originally scheduled to be held from February 14 to 28, 2027, with six teams participating. The ICC had previously suspended Sri Lanka Cricket in 2023-24 over alleged political interference. In April 2026, the Sri Lankan government temporarily took charge of the cricket body and established a Transformation Committee. Germany won the 2026 FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup after defeating Spain 1-0 in a closely contested final at the Belfius Hockey Arena. Michel Struthoff scored the decisive goal in the 44th minute, and Germany successfully defended its lead until the final whistle. This victory marked Germany’s second consecutive Hockey World Cup title and its fourth overall, following earlier triumphs in 2002, 2006, and 2023. With four titles, Germany equalled Pakistan as the joint-most successful team in Men’s Hockey World Cup history. Argentina secured the bronze medal by defeating the Netherlands 2-1.
