The United States unveiled the AIM-424 Malice long-range air-to-air missile in August 2026 following a fit test on an F-35 aircraft. The missile was developed and built by Raytheon for high-end aerial combat and has an operational range exceeding 250 nautical miles (463 kilometres). It is designed to maintain manoeuvrability against fighter-sized targets and incorporates specialised aerodynamic features and a dedicated datalink infrastructure. The AIM-424 Malice is planned for deployment on platforms including the F-47, F-35C, F/A-18, and developmental F/A-XX, representing a significant advancement in long-range aerial warfare capabilities.

Khijadiya Sanctuary in Gujarat has been identified as a critical breeding stronghold for the Black-necked Stork. A scientific study conducted by the Gujarat Ecological Education and Research (GEER) Foundation confirmed four active nests, with each breeding pair successfully producing two fledglings. The sanctuary recorded a peak seasonal population of 21 Black-necked Storks, including eight juveniles and five non-breeding adults. Located in Jamnagar district, Khijadiya is a Ramsar Site designated in 2022 and is notable for its combination of freshwater and saltwater wetland habitats, making it an important site for bird conservation.

Andhra Pradesh was the state where India’s first non-GMO, high-expansion popcorn maize hybrid seed was launched on August 24, 2026. Vice-President Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan launched the indigenous hybrid at Musunuru in Eluru district. Developed by Gourmet Popcornica, the initiative aims to reduce dependence on imported hybrid technology, conserve foreign exchange, and improve India’s competitiveness in the global popcorn maize sector. The project involves more than 17,500 farmers across eight states and covers around 40,000 acres. It also integrates maize processing, quality control, and cold storage to improve market access and increase farmers’ incomes.

Uttar Pradesh launched the UP Startup Mission portal along with the Startup Policy 2026 to strengthen its startup ecosystem. The initiative aims to provide startups and entrepreneurs with easier access to government services, funding, incubation, and other resources. Uttar Pradesh currently has more than 24,000 startups, including eight unicorns, compared with around 120 startups before 2017. The policy also focuses on supporting Centres of Excellence in areas such as MedTech, drones, quantum computing, space technology, robotics, and green hydrogen, while promoting employment, innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth.

Axis Bank partnered with Citigroup Inc. on August 24, 2026, to finance Non-Resident Indian (NRI) foreign-currency deposits and support India’s foreign exchange reserves. Under the arrangement, Axis Bank provides standby letters of credit that support offshore financing extended by Citigroup to NRI investors. This mechanism enables leveraged investment in foreign-currency deposits and allows offshore lenders to provide financing without maintaining a retail presence in India. Axis Bank also offers FCNR (B) deposits with interest rates of up to 6.40%. The partnership strengthens financial linkages with NRIs while supporting foreign-currency inflows into India.

Japan is partnering with India to mobilise 10 trillion yen of Japanese private investment into India over the next 10 years, with a strong focus on semiconductors and artificial intelligence. The partnership also covers green hydrogen, data centres, digital infrastructure, and cybersecurity. Japanese financial institutions such as MUFG and Mizuho are already expanding their presence in India. The initiative supports India’s broader economic vision of becoming a USD 30 trillion economy by 2047. GIFT City in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, is also being promoted as a key gateway for international investment and financial activities.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) acquired 100 per cent of the shares of MHP Management- und IT-Beratung GmbH, a subsidiary of German automaker Porsche, for an enterprise value of €320 million. The acquisition, announced on August 24, 2026, is part of a broader strategic partnership between TCS, MHP, and Porsche. Porsche also signed a five-year partnership valued at €1.25 billion. The collaboration includes establishing a dedicated AI Mobility Centre of Excellence for Porsche and focuses on next-generation manufacturing technologies, software-defined mobility, and digital transformation. TCS is headquartered in Mumbai and was founded in 1968.

R Praggnanandhaa became the first Indian player to win the Grand Chess Tour title after defeating American Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana 15-13 in a thrilling final at the Saint Louis Chess Club. He made a remarkable comeback after trailing by six points at the start of the decisive day. Praggnanandhaa won both rapid games and held his nerve during the blitz phase to secure the title. The victory earned him USD 200,000 in prize money and added another major achievement to his successful year, following his Norway Chess triumph.

Haryana hosted the inauguration of the National Security Guard’s (NSG) first-ever Mahila Commando Conversion Course (MCCC) on August 26, 2026. The 12-week specialised program is being conducted at the NSG training centre in Manesar. It is designed for women personnel selected from various State Police Forces and Central Armed Police Forces. The training covers counter-terror operations, tactical intervention, marksmanship, hostage rescue, physical conditioning, and weapons handling. The initiative aims to establish uniform professional standards among participating personnel and strengthen coordination between India’s security agencies in responding to complex security and counter-terrorism situations.

August 28 is observed as World Sanskrit Day 2026, also known as Sanskrit Diwas or Vishva Sanskrit Diwas. The day falls on Shravana Purnima, the full moon day of the Shravana month. It aims to promote awareness of Sanskrit and highlight its contributions to Indian literature, philosophy, science, religion, and linguistics. Sanskrit Day has been officially observed in India since 1969 following notifications issued by the Union Ministry of Education. Celebrations commonly include shloka recitations, essay competitions, debates, seminars, and other activities that encourage students and the younger generation to learn about Sanskrit and its rich heritage.
