Harshita Jakhar became the first Indian woman to feature in the Tour de France Femmes in 2026. The 19-year-old cyclist participated in the event in Switzerland and led the ceremonial start of Stage Two in Aigle, completing a 4.5 km ride ahead of the professional peloton. She was also selected for the UCI World Cycling Talent Programme, which provides elite international exposure to cyclists from developing nations. Jakhar won three gold medals at the 2025 Khelo India Youth Games and earned a silver and two bronze medals at the 2024 Asian Junior Cycling Championships. She trains at the SAI National Centre of Excellence in Patiala.

SEBI extended the deadline for regulated entities to complete digital accessibility audits and address platform-related issues to October 31, 2026. The extension provides additional time to comply with the requirements of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. The original deadline for completing digital platform accessibility audits was April 30, while the timeline for full compliance and remediation was July 31. The mandate applies to all SEBI-regulated entities and aims to ensure that digital platforms are accessible to persons with disabilities, promoting inclusivity and equal access to financial markets. SEBI regulates India’s securities market and protects investor interests.

L&T, through its subsidiary L&T Energy Hydrocarbon (LTEH), secured a major contract worth over ₹15,000 crore from ADNOC Offshore for the Umm Shaif Gas Cap project in Abu Dhabi. The project has a total investment of $6.2 billion and involves Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation, and Commissioning (EPCIC) of offshore facilities, along with upgrades to existing infrastructure. LTEH Offshore will act as the lead partner, working with international companies including TotalEnergies, Eni, and China National Petroleum Corp. L&T is a major Indian multinational conglomerate involved in EPC projects and high-tech manufacturing. It is headquartered in Mumbai and was founded in 1938 by two Danish engineers.

K Rajaraman was re-appointed as the Chairperson of the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) for a further period of 27 months. The Central Government extended his tenure beyond July 31, 2026, until he reaches the age of 65 years. His extended term will conclude on October 24, 2028, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. Rajaraman was initially appointed as IFSCA Chairperson in 2023 for a three-year term. IFSCA was established in April 2020 under the International Financial Services Centres Authority Act, 2019, and is headquartered at GIFT City, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

HDFC Bank launched two specialised savings account variants, ‘Max for Seniors’ and ‘Max for Her’, on August 4, 2026, under its Savings Max portfolio. ‘Max for Seniors’ provides benefits such as digital fraud insurance, an Auto Sweep facility, an additional 0.5% interest rate on Fixed Deposits, doorstep banking, and personal accidental death cover. ‘Max for Her’ offers accident insurance, locker charge discounts, health check-ups, and airport lounge access. The products are designed specifically for senior citizens and women customers. HDFC Bank is India’s largest private sector bank by assets and is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

AS Rajeev assumed charge as the acting Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) on August 3, 2026, following the completion of the tenure of Praveen Kumar Srivastava. His appointment was authorised by the President of India under Section 10(1) of the Central Vigilance Commission Act, 2003. Rajeev has more than 38 years of banking experience and has worked with Syndicate Bank, Vijaya Bank, Indian Bank, and Bank of Maharashtra, where he served as Managing Director and CEO. He was originally appointed as a Vigilance Commissioner on February 9, 2024. The CVC was established in 1964 based on the Santhanam Committee’s recommendations.

Hiroshima Day is observed every year on August 6 to commemorate the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, by the United States in 1945 during the Second World War. Hiroshima Day 2026 marks the 81st anniversary of the tragedy. The day honours those who lost their lives, remembers the survivors known as Hibakusha, and promotes global peace, nuclear disarmament, and non-proliferation. On August 6, 1945, the uranium-based atomic bomb “Little Boy” was dropped on Hiroshima from the B-29 bomber Enola Gay. The bombing caused massive destruction and long-term health, psychological, and social consequences for survivors.

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Esri India on August 3, 2026, to collaborate on advanced Geographic Information System (GIS), Location Intelligence, and GeoAI solutions for India’s defence sector. The partnership aims to modernise defence infrastructure and strengthen situational awareness and operational coordination. Esri India will provide specialised training to BEL personnel and support the development of in-house geospatial capabilities using the Indo ArcGIS platform. The collaboration will also explore emerging technologies such as Quantum Technologies, unmanned systems, and Big Data Analytics. BEL, established in 1954, is a Navratna CPSE under the Ministry of Defence and is headquartered in Bengaluru.

Odisha is hosting the 13th BRICS Education Ministers’ Meeting and the 3rd BRICS Senior Officials’ Meeting in Bhubaneswar from August 5 to 7, 2026. The meetings are being conducted under India’s BRICS Chairship 2026 and are led by the Ministry of Education. The agenda includes strengthening Early Childhood Care and Education, expanding vocational training through the BRICS TVET Cooperation Alliance, advancing the Mutual Recognition of Qualifications framework, and promoting research, innovation, and start-ups. A new Model BRICS Initiative has also been launched to familiarise students with multilateral diplomacy. Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, is known as the ‘Temple City of India’.

SBI Research projected India’s GDP growth at approximately 7% for Q1 FY27 in its Pre-Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) report released on August 1, 2026. This estimate is higher than the RBI’s earlier downgraded projection of 6.6%. Several economic indicators supported the optimistic outlook, including 7.3% growth in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), 19.2% expansion in industrial activity and credit, and a 24.1% year-on-year increase in domestic passenger vehicle sales in June. Electricity demand and exports also recorded strong growth. SBI Research expects the economy to maintain momentum despite global uncertainties and geopolitical challenges.
