The Grih Pravesh ceremony for 5 lakh completed houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) was launched in Maharashtra by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on May 15, 2026. The event took place in Satara and also marked the handover of keys for the 3-croreth rural house completed under the scheme. PMAY-G, launched in 2016 under the Ministry of Rural Development, aims to provide “Housing for All” in rural India. Maharashtra also received substantial central financial assistance and approval for PMGSY-IV road projects to improve rural connectivity and infrastructure across several habitations.

CTBC Bank became the first Taiwanese bank to establish a branch in GIFT City, Gujarat, on May 13, 2026. This marked a significant milestone as it was also the first Taiwanese bank to set up operations anywhere in India. The branch was opened to strengthen cross-border financing, trade, and investment activities between India, Taiwan, and other Asian markets. CTBC Bank has maintained a financial presence in India for around 30 years through branches in New Delhi and Kattupakkam (Chennai). Headquartered in Taipei, Taiwan, the bank was established in 1966 and currently operates under the leadership of CEO Tanmoy Adhikari in India.

Karnataka was selected to receive 1,243 electric vehicle (EV) chargers under the central PM E-Drive scheme on May 12, 2026. The project, approved with a financial outlay of ₹123.26 crore, aims to strengthen the state’s electric mobility infrastructure and reduce range anxiety among EV users. The PM E-Drive scheme, administered by the Ministry of Heavy Industries, promotes clean and sustainable transportation across India. Karnataka has been a pioneer in the EV sector, becoming the first Indian state to introduce a dedicated Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Policy in 2017. The state also leads the country in EV startups and public charging infrastructure development.

Sikkim celebrated its 51st Statehood Day on May 16, 2026, marking more than five decades since it officially became a state of India in 1975. Before joining India, Sikkim functioned as an independent Himalayan kingdom ruled by the Chogyal monarchy under the Namgyal dynasty. Growing political demands for democratic governance and public participation led to a historic referendum in 1975, where the majority supported integration with India. Following this, the monarchy was abolished, and the 36th Constitutional Amendment Act, 1975, formally made Sikkim the 22nd state of India. The state is also known for its rich cultural diversity and strong Buddhist heritage.

Akash Ambani was appointed as the Managing Director of Jio Platforms on April 9, 2026, for a five-year term. The appointment came at a significant time as the company prepared for its upcoming Initial Public Offering (IPO), with plans to file draft papers by May or June 2026. Akash Ambani has been associated with Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) since October 2014 as a board member and has played an important role in the company’s expansion. Reliance Jio, launched in 2016, rapidly transformed India’s telecom sector by achieving 100 million subscribers in less than six months after its launch.

The Mahey Tokpo-Raldho irrigation canal was inaugurated in the Union Territory of Ladakh by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on May 15, 2026. The canal, located in the high-altitude Changthang district at over 14,000 feet, was constructed to address persistent water shortages in the region. Stretching 2.10 km and supplied by Yaya Lake, the project is designed to support irrigation across nearly 100 acres of agricultural land in the Mahey region. Alongside the inauguration, a plantation drive involving 15,000 trees was also organised to promote slope stabilisation and soil conservation in the ecologically sensitive Himalayan region.

The National Conclave on Minorities Welfare organized by the Ministry of Minority Affairs (MoMA) in May 2026, was conducted under the theme “Bhagidari Se Bhagyoday,” which means “Prosperity through Participation.” The conclave focused on improving minority welfare through participative governance and the integration of artificial intelligence in public service delivery. Discussions included the use of AI-powered conversational bots for grievance redressal and welfare scheme implementation, as well as AI applications for Hajj 2027 management. Several technology partners, such as Generation India, EkStep Foundation, Gnani, and Sarvam, showcased innovative AI-enabled governance solutions to improve citizen-centric services and inclusive development initiatives.

P Kumaran, a senior 1992-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, formally took charge as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom on May 15, 2026. Before this appointment, he served as Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). He succeeded Vikram Doraiswami, who was appointed as India’s Ambassador to China during a senior diplomatic reshuffle. P Kumaran has also held important diplomatic positions earlier, including serving as India’s Ambassador to Qatar and High Commissioner to Singapore. The role of High Commissioner is specifically used between Commonwealth nations such as India and the United Kingdom.

Tripura became the first Indian state to complete all 51 priority areas under the national Compliance Reduction and Deregulation initiative launched in January 2026. The initiative, led by the Cabinet Secretariat, focuses on simplifying governance, reducing regulatory burdens, and improving ease of doing business. Tripura introduced several digital governance reforms, including a centralised e-Gazette system, an upgraded SWAGAAT single-window approval platform, and an auto-appeal mechanism under the Right to Services framework. The state also implemented sectoral reforms such as self-certification for land-use approvals and inspection exemptions for industries, while partnering with National Law University Tripura and IIM Calcutta for legal review and impact assessment.

India’s first satellite-tagged Ganges softshell turtle was released in Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve as part of a major wildlife conservation initiative. The project was launched on Endangered Species Day to monitor the movement, habitat use, breeding sites, and seasonal migration patterns of the endangered freshwater turtle species. The Ganges softshell turtle, scientifically known as Nilssonia gangetica, is listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List despite being widely distributed across India. The initiative was jointly carried out by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Assam Forest Department, Kaziranga authorities, and supported by the National Geographic Society to strengthen conservation planning in the Brahmaputra river basin.
