The Indian U-15 girls’ team dominated the tournament by securing 7 gold medals and topping the overall standings. Notable performers included Anzee and Angel, who won gold medals in their respective weight categories. In the boys’ division, Yash Kumar and Mohd Yasser also secured gold medals. The championship showcased India’s strong potential in international amateur boxing competitions.

Scientists from the CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) discovered a massive underground palaeo-channel stretching between Prayagraj and Kanpur in the Ganga-Yamuna Doab region. The channel, buried 10 to 15 metres below the surface and extending nearly 200 km, represents an ancient independent river system distinct from the Ganga and Yamuna rivers. The discovery was made using advanced Heliborne transient electromagnetic technology (H-TEM) along with confirmatory drilling. Researchers identified highly porous clay and sand layers within the channel, making it suitable for groundwater recharge projects. The initiative involved collaboration between CSIR-NGRI, the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), and the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB).

The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern on May 17, 2026. The outbreak began in the mining region of Mongwalu in the Ituri province of the DRC and later spread to the capitals Kinshasa and Kampala. The disease involved the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, which currently has no approved vaccine or specific treatment. WHO recommended emergency management measures, cross-border screening, and temporary travel restrictions for exposed individuals to contain the spread of the deadly virus across the affected region.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) conducted India’s first-ever seizure of the psychotropic drug Captagon under Operation RAGEPILL. Announced on May 16, 2026, the operation led to the recovery of 227.7 kg of Captagon tablets and powder valued at approximately ₹182 crore in the illegal market. The drugs were seized from locations in New Delhi and Mundra, Gujarat, where they were concealed in machinery and imported cargo from Syria. Captagon, commonly known as the “Jihadi Drug,” contains substances such as Fenetylline and Amphetamine. The operation exposed an international trafficking network attempting to use India as a transit hub for smuggling narcotics to Gulf countries, especially Saudi Arabia.

The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) observes its Incorporation Day on May 17 every year. The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) Pune inaugurated a dedicated Incubation Center for Startups in Weather and Climate on May 15, 2026, and also hosted the Weather and Climate Innovation Meet for Startups and Entrepreneurs (WISE-2026). The Indian Navy inaugurated its premier Naval Sailing Node at the Upper Lake, also known as Bhojtal, in Bhopal on 17 May 2026. The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, the Chief of the Naval Staff. The state-of-the-art facility was established to support advanced training activities for the Indian Navy Sailing Team, rowing, canoeing, and kayaking teams, along with NCC cadets.
