HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) signed agreements with BEML and Adani Defence Systems and Technologies Limited on August 14, 2026, for manufacturing fuselage structures of the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand. BEML will manufacture 48 fuselage structures under an order worth ₹184 crore, while Adani Defence will produce 42 structures. The initiative marks the first integration of private industry into helicopter fuselage production and aims to increase industrial participation in India’s aerospace sector. The production supports the manufacturing of 156 Prachand helicopters ordered for the Indian Armed Forces and is being carried out at HAL’s new facility in Tumakuru, Karnataka.

India is scheduled to host the BRICS Environment Working Group meetings on 17-18 August 2026 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change is the nodal ministry coordinating the event. Representatives and environment ministers from BRICS member countries are expected to participate and discuss areas of environmental cooperation. India has previously hosted the BRICS Summit in 2012, 2016, and 2021. Bharat Mandapam, located at Pragati Maidan, is a major international convention and exhibition venue and also hosted the 18th G20 Summit in September 2023.

Uttar Pradesh is the state where the historic Parichha Dam is located in Jhansi. Built across the Betwa River, the dam was constructed between 1881 and 1886 and became an important component of the Betwa Canal System. On August 14, 2026, it was recognised as a World Heritage Irrigation Structure (WHIS) by the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID). The dam is 1,174 metres long and 16.8 metres high, featuring 318 steel falling shutters. Its irrigation network extends across Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, covering thousands of kilometres and irrigating large areas of farmland.

Chandigarh was the Union Territory where the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)-based Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system for the Public Distribution System (PDS) was launched on August 16, 2026. Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched the pilot project, which uses e-RUPI digital vouchers to ensure transparent and leak-proof delivery of food subsidies. Developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the initiative uses blockchain-based CBDC technology for real-time transaction settlement. Similar CBDC-linked models are also being explored for agricultural and fertiliser subsidy distribution.

Magnus Carlsen won the Esports World Cup chess title for the second consecutive year on August 16, 2026, in Paris, France. Representing Team Liquid, the Norwegian World No. 1 defeated Belarusian Grandmaster Denis Lazavik by a score of 2-0 in the final. Carlsen remained undefeated throughout the competition, demonstrating his continued dominance in competitive chess. He is a five-time World Chess Champion and holds the record for the highest peak FIDE rating in history, at 2882. Hikaru Nakamura finished third after defeating Alireza Firouzja 4-1 in the third-place match.

Reliance is set to partner with UK-based Rolls-Royce to explore the establishment of a dedicated aerospace gas turbine complex in India. The proposed collaboration aims to support the joint development and manufacturing of aero-engines for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. The partnership combines Rolls-Royce’s expertise in advanced propulsion technology with Reliance’s manufacturing and execution capabilities. The initiative is expected to strengthen India’s indigenous aerospace ecosystem, reduce dependence on foreign-made defence equipment, and enhance domestic capabilities in fighter-engine production. The AMCA is a twin-engine stealth fighter being developed for India’s future air-combat requirements.

BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) launched several customer-centric digital initiatives and infrastructure projects on August 15, 2026, to commemorate India’s 80th Independence Day. The company ordered 26,300 additional 4G BTS sites for deployment in rural and remote areas. It also introduced the Re 1 Freedom 2.0 offer, extended the validity of its ₹2,399 annual prepaid plan, and launched the BSNL Selfcare New app with AI chatbot and voice-search features. BSNL also partnered with Polycab to manufacture telecom hardware under the Hardware-as-a-Service model. BSNL is a Central Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Communications.

Dr Padma Gurmet, Director of the National Institute of Sowa-Rigpa in Leh, was conferred the UT Ladakh State Award 2025 on 13 August 2026. The award recognised his exemplary contribution to the preservation, promotion, and development of Sowa-Rigpa, a traditional system of medicine practised in the Himalayan region. The honour was presented by Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena during the UT State Awards ceremony covering the years 2022–2025. A total of 36 distinguished individuals were honoured for exceptional contributions across various fields and for their efforts toward the development of society and the Union Territory of Ladakh.

Nepal is partnering with India to conduct a joint mapping exercise of cross-border land occupation using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The initiative aims to generate reliable technical information about areas where people cultivate or occupy land across the international boundary. The survey is expected to begin after the 2026 monsoon and be completed within three years. India and Nepal agreed on an annual plan and budget during the 13th meeting of the Survey Officers’ Committee in Lucknow. The aerial images will be jointly analysed to understand the nature and extent of cross-border occupation, particularly in areas affected by changing river courses.

Oman reached an agreement with Iran on the shipping route map for vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz. The agreement followed several weeks of technical negotiations aimed at ensuring safe maritime navigation through this strategically important waterway. Both Iran and Oman border the Strait of Hormuz, making their coordination important for the safe movement of ships and international trade. The agreement focuses specifically on navigation and does not alter either country’s sovereignty over the waterway. However, Iran indicated that the complete restoration of normal commercial shipping remains conditional on broader developments involving the United States.
