Willie Walsh officially assumed charge as the new CEO of IndiGo on August 3, ushering in a new phase of leadership for India's largest airline. He succeeded Pieter Elbers and brings extensive experience from leading Aer Lingus, British Airways, International Airlines Group (IAG), and serving as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Walsh is expected to guide IndiGo's international expansion, strengthen operational efficiency, and enhance customer service. The GI & Beyond 2.0 Summit is scheduled to be held on August 5, 2026, at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi. Organised jointly by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handlooms) and the Handloom Export Promotion Council (HEPC), the summit aims to promote India's GI-registered handloom and handicraft products. Key highlights include the launch of the Digital Handloom Atlas, unveiling of the HEPC Diamond Jubilee logo, participation of international buyers from around 10 countries, live weaving demonstrations, and an IIT Madras presentation on using Artificial Intelligence to strengthen the Geographical Indication ecosystem. India finished fourth in the overall medal tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026 held in Glasgow, Scotland. The country secured a total of 39 medals, comprising 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze medals. Although this was fewer than the 61 medals won at Birmingham 2022, the Glasgow Games featured fewer sports and medal events. India performed better in comparable sports, highlighting the country's growing competitiveness. Standout achievements included Gulveer Singh winning two medals, India's dominance in boxing with seven gold medals, and the nation's first-ever Commonwealth Games judo golds. The closing ceremony also marked the official handover of the Games to Ahmedabad for the 2030 edition.

Varsha Ashok Aglawe assumed charge as the 54th Director General of the Geological Survey of India (GSI) on July 31, 2026, becoming the first woman to lead the organisation in its 176-year history. A distinguished palaeontologist with more than 30 years of experience, she joined GSI in 1992 after serving at the Indian Bureau of Mines. Before her appointment, she was the Additional Director General and Head of the Eastern Region in Kolkata. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Youth Centre, also known as Viveka Smaraka, at the Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama in Mysuru, Karnataka, on August 1, 2026. The centre commemorates the support extended by the then Maharaja of Mysuru to Swami Vivekananda about 130 years ago before his historic address at the 1893 Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago. President Droupadi Murmu approved the Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Act, 2026, completing the final constitutional requirement before the law can come into force. The Act will become effective only after the Maharashtra Government issues an official notification. It prohibits religious conversions carried out through coercion, fraud, misrepresentation, inducement, violence, or marriage for conversion purposes, while permitting voluntary conversions. The law also requires a 60-day advance notice to the district magistrate before conversion, allows close relatives to file complaints, shifts the burden of proving voluntary conversion to the person conducting it, and prescribes imprisonment of up to seven years for offences and up to ten years for repeat violations.

Italy temporarily suspended the Schengen border-free travel arrangement with Spain for one month after a large number of migrants entered the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. As part of the measure, Italy reintroduced passport and identity document checks for passengers arriving from Spain by air and sea, while targeted inspections were carried out on non-EU nationals. Italy also coordinated with France to strengthen security along the Franco-Italian land border. Under Schengen rules, member countries are permitted to restore internal border controls temporarily when there is a serious threat to public order or national security.

Alka Nangia Arora, a 1991-batch officer of the Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS), assumed charge as the Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA) on August 1, 2026. As the head of the Defence Accounts Department under the Ministry of Defence, she brings over three decades of experience in public financial management. During her career, she has served as Additional Secretary and Financial Adviser in the Department of Agricultural Research and Education, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of MSME, Managing Director of the Central Cottage Industries Corporation of India Limited, and Additional Development Commissioner for Handicrafts under the Ministry of Textiles.

Vice Admiral AN Pramod assumed charge as the Deputy Chief of Naval Staff on August 1, 2026, succeeding Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, who retired after 38 years of distinguished service. Commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1990, he has played key operational roles in Operation Vijay, Operation Parakram, and Operation Snow Leopard following the Galwan incident. Before his appointment, he served as Director General Naval Operations and also held the post of Flag Officer Commanding Maharashtra Naval Area. His exemplary service has been recognised with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in 2024 and the Yudh Seva Medal (YSM) in 2025.

Air Marshal Sandeep Thareja was appointed as the next Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) by the Government of India on July 31, 2026, with effect from August 31, 2026. He will succeed Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin and is currently serving as the Director General Medical Services (Air). During his distinguished career, he played a key role in operationalising the BHISHM Cube for rapid humanitarian medical response and strengthening medical preparedness for the Gaganyaan Human Spaceflight Mission. A recipient of the Sena Medal and the Vishisht Seva Medal & Bar, he has also served as Commandant of AFMC Pune and held several important military medical appointments.

Ahmedabad officially became the host city of the 2030 Commonwealth Games after receiving the Commonwealth Games Flag and Host Baton during the closing ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. The handover marked the beginning of preparations for hosting the centenary edition of the Games in 2030. India will host the Commonwealth Games for the second time after previously organising them in New Delhi in 2010, becoming only the second country after Australia to host the event twice. The ceremony also featured a grand Indian cultural showcase highlighting the theme "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam," India's sporting achievements, musical collaborations, and performances by renowned artists, symbolising friendship, unity, and the transition of the Games to India.
