Aptitude - Time and Distance - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Time and Distance - General Questions (Q.No. 3)
3.
If a person walks at 14 km/hr instead of 10 km/hr, he would have walked 20 km more. The actual distance travelled by him is:
50 km
56 km
70 km
80 km
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let the actual distance travelled be x km.

Then, x = x + 20
10 14

14x = 10x + 200

4x = 200

x = 50 km.

Very easy approach:

Here d1 - d2 = 14 - 10 = 4km/h.
Now 4 = 20.
Then 1 = 5.
The actual distance is 10 * 5 = 50km.

At usual time Period, a man Covers a Distance of 10 KM/hr ,But he has increased the Speed to 14 km/hr.

That means he will going 4 Km/hr additionally.

To Cover the Distance of 20 km with the Same of 14 km/hr he has to travel additional 5 hours.
4km * 5hrs = 20 km.

After 5 hours of travel if the person is travelling at the speed of 10 km/hr covers;
D = S * T/
D = 1 0 *5.
D = 50 KM.

The speed of man is =10km/hr.

In question that given if he walked 14km/hr instead of 10km/hr,he will reach
20km more(but the time is same).

If he walked 10km/hr, we take that distance covered is Xkm.

If he walked 14km/hr, we take that distance covered X+20km.

But for a both cases time is the same.
(Time = distance/speed).

Since X/10 = (X+20)/14.
14X = 10X+200
4X = 200
X = 50km.

By ratio method, if time is constant speed is directly proportional to distance so;
speed: 10 : 14.
distance : 10x : 14x.
difference btw (10x-14x) = 4x.
4x = 20,
x = 5.

Put this in the usual speed 10x= 10*5=50 km.

Let,
Actual dist = X(at-10km\hr).
x/10 = x + 20/14,
14x = 10x + 20,
14x - 10x = 20,
4x = 20,
x = 20/4,
x = 5.

The actual distance at 10kmph * actual distance.
= 10 * 5,
= 50km.
So, the answer is 50km.

According to me;

Here d1-d2 = 14km/h-10km/h=4km/h
Now 4 unit = 20.
Then 1 unit = 5.
Then the actual distance is 10*5 = 50km.

His actual speed is 10 km/h and from the given question.
14x-10x = 20,
4x = 20,
x = 5 hours.

Then the actual distance will be;
10 * 5 = 50 km.

We don't know the actual distance so let we consider it as x.
The actual speed is 10 km/ hr ->x.
Another speed is 14 km/hr ->x + 20 km.
( because we have considered distance is x and if he had walked 14 km/ hr then he would have walked 20 km more)
So,
X/ 10 = x+20/14,
14x = 10x+200,
14x-10x = 200,
4x = 200,
x = 200/4,
x = 50.

So,the actual distance is 50 km.
