Discussion Forum : Statement and Assumption - Section 1 (Q.No. 1)
Directions to Solve
In each question below is given a statement followed by two assumptions numbered I and II. You have to consider the statement and the following assumptions and decide which of the assumptions is implicit in the statement.
Give answer
- (A) If only assumption I is implicit
- (B) If only assumption II is implicit
- (C) If either I or II is implicit
- (D) If neither I nor II is implicit
- (E) If both I and II are implicit.
1.
Statement: "You are hereby appointed as a programmer with a probation period of one year and your performance will be reviewed at the end of the period for confirmation." - A line in an appointment letter.
Assumptions:
- The performance of an individual generally is not known at the time of appointment offer.
- Generally an individual tries to prove his worth in the probation period.
Answer: Option
Explanation:
The performance of the individual has to be tested over a span of time as the statement mentions. So, I is implicit. The statement mentions that the individual's worth shall be reviewed (during probation period) before confirmation. So, II is also implicit.

According to me, The answer E is correct.
Both statements has a word "generally"
As the candidate has applied for the post we can safely assume that he will try to prove his mettle during the prob period. After getting the job he will quit or a case of a new project in the third year is out of the question.
The real-time performance of the candidate as a programmer can not be assessed by other means but only by real-time experience.
Generally, this is the case as implied in the statement.
So E should be correct.

How can you assume that a candidate will prove his worth only in the period of probation. Let us assume that a new project comes up with the company in 3 years after his appointment. And he really like the concept, won't he perform better and be of more worth for the company. And in the same way does company assumes that all its permanent employees are working below par as they have already proved their worth in initial period of probation.
So according to me only statement I is correct.
So according to me only statement I is correct.

We have to take the assumption from the P.O.V of the person who makes the statement therefore only I is implicit.

Implicit means suggested or not directly given but implied.
Here, in my opinion, the answer should be 1. Because for assuming any fact out of a given statement it is essential that either the statement has its implied meaning or have a direct relation with it.
A general statement about the results of performance on the basis of a condition in an appointment does not appear to be correct.
According to me, the correct answer should be 1.

Implicit means "implied though not directly expressed". In my point of view only statement 1 is implicit, as nothing has been talked about the nature of an employee, whether he will put an effort to show the worth during probation period.
