Directions to Solve

In each question below is given a statement followed by two assumptions numbered I and II. You have to consider the statement and the following assumptions and decide which of the assumptions is implicit in the statement.

Give answer

  • (A) If only assumption I is implicit
  • (B) If only assumption II is implicit
  • (C) If either I or II is implicit
  • (D) If neither I nor II is implicit
  • (E) If both I and II are implicit.

1.

Statement: "You are hereby appointed as a programmer with a probation period of one year and your performance will be reviewed at the end of the period for confirmation." - A line in an appointment letter.

Assumptions:

  1. The performance of an individual generally is not known at the time of appointment offer.
  2. Generally an individual tries to prove his worth in the probation period.

Only assumption I is implicit
Only assumption II is implicit
Either I or II is implicit
Neither I nor II is implicit
Both I and II are implicit
Answer: Option
Explanation:
The performance of the individual has to be tested over a span of time as the statement mentions. So, I is implicit. The statement mentions that the individual's worth shall be reviewed (during probation period) before confirmation. So, II is also implicit.

First is to look for context clues. What is the statement all about. In this statement, "acceptance to service". Then based on this, you now see the options if they say anything about the statement. Usually, if the option is a generalization, it is not true. If the option has no connection to the statement, then it is not the correct answer, of course.

Probation simply means given the employee a time frame to prove his/her worth to the employer. It is an implied term which is understandable though not directly expressed.

Also, reviewing his/her performance implied that he/she will be appraised after having gone through the given period to determine whether he/she deserves to be employed.

The two scenarios means that both are implicit. Implicit simply means an implied or to understand though not directly or clearly expressed.

An assumption is said to be implicit if it can be suggested or inferred from the the given statement but it is it is not stated directly.

1 is not implicit. Screening tests can be held to evaluate any new comer.

Performance of an individual may be known on the basis of his performance in the written examination and interview. But since not enough indications are given in the statement itself we known nothing about whether performance is known or not.

Therefore I is not an assumption.
