C. Joseph Vijay, the actor-turned-politician and founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10, 2026. The oath-taking ceremony was held at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in the presence of political leaders, celebrities, alliance partners, and thousands of supporters. His victory marked a major political shift in Tamil Nadu, ending nearly six decades of dominance by the DMK and AIADMK parties. TVK emerged as the single largest party in the 2026 Assembly elections and formed the government with support from alliance partners, including Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML.

Suvendu Adhikari became the first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chief Minister of West Bengal after taking oath on May 9, 2026. His appointment followed the BJP’s historic victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, where the party secured 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, ending the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule. The swearing-in ceremony took place at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior NDA leaders. Suvendu Adhikari had earlier joined the BJP in December 2020 after leaving the Trinamool Congress and later emerged as one of the party’s strongest leaders in West Bengal politics.

Soma Mandal, an Indian science teacher, was selected as the South Asia regional winner of the 2026 Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Awards for her innovative work in environmental education. The awards are organised by Cambridge University Press & Assessment to recognise outstanding educators from different regions across the world. Winners are chosen based on their impact on students, creativity in teaching, and contribution to education. Soma Mandal was recognized for her practical environmental initiatives that encouraged awareness and learning among students. Along with the recognition, winners receive a commemorative trophy and books worth £500 for their classrooms, supporting further educational development.

Kumar Mangalam Birla was appointed as the non-executive chairman of Vodafone Idea Limited, succeeding Ravinder Takkar. Prior to this elevation, he served as a non-executive director on the company’s board. The leadership transition was approved by the board and disclosed under Regulation 30 of the SEBI Listing Regulations, ensuring regulatory compliance and transparency. Ravinder Takkar stepped down from the chairman position and assumed the role of non-executive vice-chairman to maintain continuity in leadership. Vodafone Idea, formed through the merger of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular in 2018, is one of India’s leading telecommunications service providers with headquarters in Mumbai and Gandhinagar.

Shashi Shekhar Vempati was appointed as the new Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) by the Government of India on May 6, 2026. He succeeded Prasoon Joshi, who stepped down after being elevated as the Chairman of Prasar Bharati. Vempati will serve a three-year term from the date of assuming office. The CBFC functions under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and is responsible for regulating the public exhibition of films in India under the Cinematograph Act, 1952. Originally established as the Central Board of Film Censors in 1951, the CBFC is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
