China will host the 19th BRICS Summit in 2027 after taking over the rotating BRICS presidency from India. The announcement came at the conclusion of the 18th BRICS Summit held in New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated China on assuming the responsibility and emphasised that BRICS should focus on achieving concrete and tangible outcomes as it enters its third decade. The summit discussions also highlighted cooperation among Global South nations, sustainability, innovation and inclusive global growth. Chinese President Xi Jinping called for stronger participation of BRICS in representing the interests of the Global South in international affairs.

India’s Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for individuals aged 15 years and above was estimated at 55.6% in August 2026, according to the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) data. The rate increased from 55.4% in July 2026, representing a rise of 0.2 percentage points. The increase was mainly driven by rural areas, where LFPR rose from 58.0% to 58.2%, while urban LFPR remained unchanged at 50.4%. The PLFS is conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).

The India women’s cricket team secured the 2026 Women’s Asia Cup title by defeating Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the final held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on September 13, 2026. The victory marked India’s record-extending eighth title in the history of the Women’s Asia Cup. India was led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur, while Sri Lanka was captained by Chamari Athapaththu. The Women’s Asia Cup began in 2004, and India has remained the most successful team in the competition. The Asian Cricket Council, established in 1983 and headquartered in Colombo, organises the Asia Cup tournaments.

India’s Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation increased to 9.92% in August 2026 from 9.78% in July 2026, according to preliminary estimates released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The August inflation data was calculated using the revised base year 2022-23. Among the major commodity groups, Fuel and Power recorded the highest inflation at 22.93%, followed by Manufactured Products at 8.37% and Primary Articles at 7.76%. The WPI food index also increased to 7.05% in August from 6.65% in July, reflecting continued price pressures across important wholesale commodity categories.

Proteek K. Chakraborty, Director (Finance) of Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), received the Most Influential CFO award at the Asia Leadership Summit & Awards 2026 in Bengaluru. He has more than 32 years of professional experience in corporate finance, accounting and power sector regulations. His recognition highlights his contribution to financial management and strategic growth within ECIL.

World Ozone Day is observed annually on September 16 to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the ozone layer from depletion. The ozone layer acts as a protective shield by absorbing most of the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The day also highlights international cooperation in addressing ozone depletion and climate-related challenges. In 2026, the observance commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, which focuses on reducing hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), powerful greenhouse gases. World Ozone Day encourages sustainable cooling solutions, environmental awareness and stronger efforts to protect the ozone layer.

Madhya Pradesh released the 40th instalment of the Mukhyamantri Ladli Behna Yojana on September 13, 2026. Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav transferred ₹1,835 crore directly into the bank accounts of more than 1.25 crore eligible women beneficiaries. The scheme was launched in June 2023 with a monthly assistance of ₹1,000, which was later increased to ₹1,250 and then to ₹1,500 from November 2025. The scheme aims to support women’s financial independence and improve their health and nutrition. Since its inception, more than ₹65,000 crore has been transferred to women beneficiaries under the scheme.

Karnataka officially declared September 15 as Engineers’ Day and permitted engineers in the state to use the professional prefix ‘Er.’ before their names from 2026. The order was issued on September 15, 2026, to recognise the contributions of engineers and associate the observance with the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya. Engineers’ Day is celebrated across India on September 15 every year. Sir M. Visvesvaraya was a renowned civil engineer and administrator who contributed to irrigation, flood control and industrial development. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1955.

Six states Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand—signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Centre for the Kishau Dam project on September 15, 2026. The ₹15,624-crore multipurpose project is proposed on the Tons River, a tributary of the Yamuna, along the Himachal Pradesh-Uttarakhand border. The project was delayed for nearly eight years due to inter-state coordination and financial-sharing issues. Once completed, the 660 MW project is expected to provide irrigation, drinking and industrial water, electricity generation and increased flow to the Yamuna.

Sanjukta Parashar became the first-ever woman IPS officer to head the CRPF’s Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), an elite force specialising in jungle warfare and counter-insurgency operations. A 2006-batch IPS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, she has served in the Assam Police and the National Investigation Agency (NIA). She has also led counter-terrorism operations and previously headed the CID wing of Assam Police. Parashar gained recognition for her role in counter-insurgency operations against the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), contributing to her reputation as the “Iron Lady of Assam.”
