September 8 is observed annually as International Literacy Day to highlight literacy as a fundamental human right and an essential foundation for education, employment, social participation, and sustainable development. UNESCO declared International Literacy Day in 1966 during its 14th General Conference, and the first observance took place in 1967. In 2026, the day marks its 60th anniversary, with the theme “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity.” UNESCO’s 2026 celebrations are being held on September 8 and 9 in Chiapas, Mexico, bringing together education ministers, experts, educators, and learners to discuss global literacy challenges and solutions.

Google expanded its India-first agricultural AI models to eleven countries across the Asia-Pacific and Africa regions to support farming and water management. Developed by Google DeepMind, the models analyse agricultural landscapes using satellite imagery. The Agricultural Landscape Understanding (ALU) model provides field-level mapping and insights, while the Agricultural Monitoring & Event Detection (AMED) model tracks agricultural activities and events. These technologies are accessible through APIs and as a data layer on Google Earth. In India, platforms such as ADeX and Krishivaas use these models to support more than 5 million farmers in Telangana.

Singapore hosted the Second Global Business Summit on BRI Infrastructure on September 6, 2026. The summit brought together more than 300 senior leaders and private sector pioneers to address global connectivity challenges and explore opportunities linked to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Poompuhar, historically known as Kaveripoompattinam, is the site of the third phase of underwater archaeological exploration conducted by the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology. The exploration began on September 7, 2026, off the coast of Poompuhar in Mayiladuthurai district. Archaeologists and trained divers are searching for submerged structures around two kilometres into the sea and diving to depths of about 10 metres. The primary objective is to uncover evidence of ancient Tamil maritime trade and identify historical port infrastructure. Poompuhar was an important Chola-period port city and is prominently associated with Sangam literature, including the Silappathikaram.

IndusInd Bank partnered with Razorpay to launch RAY, a conversational AI account manager designed to help businesses manage payments and support through WhatsApp. The platform uses natural language processing to understand both text and voice notes, enabling businesses to access payment summaries and sales projections. It can also perform actions such as issuing refunds and generating payment links directly within the chat. RAY proactively tracks payment health, flags upcoming settlements, and provides bank holiday notifications to support liquidity management. The AI assistant had already processed more than 20,000 conversations during its early phase.

Gujarat will host the 72nd National Film Awards ceremony on September 22, 2026. The event is scheduled to take place at Ekta Nagar in Narmada district, near the iconic Statue of Unity, where President Droupadi Murmu will present the awards. The ceremony marks a significant departure from the long-standing tradition of holding the National Film Awards in New Delhi. Satwik and Chirag have also made history as the first Indian men’s doubles pair to achieve the World No. 1 ranking and won India’s first Asian Games men’s doubles badminton gold in 2022.
