August 23 is observed as National Space Day in India to commemorate the historic soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon on August 23, 2023. The Vikram lander successfully landed near the lunar south polar region, making India the first country to achieve a successful landing in that region and the fourth country to accomplish a soft landing on the Moon. National Space Day celebrates India’s achievements in space science and aims to inspire students, researchers, innovators, startups, and young entrepreneurs to contribute to the country’s growing space sector. The 2026 theme focuses on innovation, collaboration, and global space leadership.

Chhattisgarh became the first inland state in India to initiate the export of value-added Tilapia products, with 382 tonnes exported to the United States. The achievement was highlighted during a review of the Tilapia Cluster under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) in Raipur. The state has received significant investment under PMMSY, with nearly ₹900 crore allocated to develop its fisheries sector. Modern technologies such as IoT, Biofloc, and Recirculatory Aquaculture Systems are being promoted to improve production and processing. The initiative aims to strengthen fisheries infrastructure, create employment, and enhance India’s seafood export competitiveness.

Dr. Eluri Sreedhar was appointed as the Honorary Advisor to the BRICS Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BRICS CCI) on August 17, 2026. His responsibilities include advising on economic collaboration and strategic partnerships, while supporting initiatives focused on inclusive development and social empowerment. He will also contribute to the development of sustainable opportunities in self-employment and livelihood creation and promote entrepreneurship and community empowerment at national and international levels. The appointment letter was formally presented by Sameep Shastri, Chairman of BRICS CCI. Established in 2012, BRICS CCI is a non-profit organisation headquartered in New Delhi that promotes trade, commerce, and industry among BRICS countries and emerging economies.

Himachal Pradesh became the fifth state in India to implement a ban on the manufacture, storage, and sale of synthetic or non-dairy analogue paneer being sold as genuine dairy products. The ban was imposed on August 21, 2026, under Section 30(2)(a) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. It applies to all Food Business Operators, including restaurants, hotels, cloud kitchens, and caterers. Businesses are prohibited from using analogue paneer in dishes marketed as paneer. The order is effective immediately for one year and also requires compliance with food labelling and traceability regulations to protect consumers.

Bharti Life Insurance is the target entity in the equity shareholding acquisition approved by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) on August 19, 2026. Prudential Corporation of India is the acquirer in the transaction, which involves the acquisition of a specific equity shareholding in Bharti Life Insurance. The CCI is responsible for enforcing the Competition Act, 2002, and preventing anti-competitive practices in India. It functions under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and is headquartered in New Delhi. The approval demonstrates the role of competition authorities in reviewing significant corporate transactions to ensure fair competition in the market.

Somanath Sreedhara Panicker was appointed as a part-time Non-official Director on the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India on August 20, 2026. The Central Government appointed him for a four-year tenure beginning from the date of appointment. Somanath Panicker is a former Chairman of ISRO and played a significant leadership role in the Chandrayaan-3 mission. The mission achieved a historic milestone by making India the first country to land near the Moon’s south polar region and the fourth country to achieve a soft landing on the Moon. Anand Mahindra was simultaneously reappointed to the RBI Central Board.

9.99% is the maximum shareholding that the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) is permitted to acquire in HDFC Bank following approval from the Reserve Bank of India on August 19, 2026. LIC’s holding was 4.11% as of August 14, 2026, and the RBI allowed it to increase its stake up to 9.99% of HDFC Bank’s paid-up share capital or voting rights. The acquisition must comply with RBI’s Master Directions on share acquisition in private banks and relevant SEBI regulations. The move is intended to strengthen LIC’s investment exposure to the financial services sector.

NSDL Payments Bank entered into a co-branded partnership with Paramotor Digital Technology Ltd on August 21, 2026, to launch industry-specific prepaid cards across India. The partnership will support prepaid card solutions for both enterprises and consumers across various payment networks. Paramotor Digital will use the banking infrastructure of NSDL Payments Bank for card issuance. The collaboration will cover platforms such as SpendPro for consumer spending management, Yayyy.shop for digital gifting, and RewardOn for rewards and loyalty services. All payment solutions developed under the partnership will comply with RBI regulations and be integrated with secure existing payment networks.

Jalandhar was the city where the National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar launched the Yashoda AI initiative on August 18, 2026. The initiative is an Artificial Intelligence literacy programme aimed at promoting digital empowerment and increasing women’s participation in emerging technologies. It provides training in areas such as cybersecurity, digital privacy, and safe online practices. The programme was originally initiated by the NCW in 2025. During the visit, the NCW also launched the She Serves programme at a women’s college to encourage young women to consider careers in the Armed Forces.
