20-year-old American sprinter Noah Lyles ran the fastest 100-metre race of the year to clinch the US national title in Des Moines, Iowa. He clocked 9.88 seconds in the final, after equalling Mike Rodgers' world-leading time of 2018 of 9.89 seconds in the semi-finals.

Researchers at the University of Michigan (UM) in the US have developed the world's smallest computer "Michigan Micro Mote". It measures just 0.3 mm and could help find new ways to monitor and treat cancer. In addition to the RAM and photovoltaics, the new micro computing device has processors and wireless transmitters and receivers. Since they are too small to have conventional radio antennae, they receive and transmit data with visible light. A base station provides light for power and programming, and it receives the data. Designed as a precision temperature sensor, the computer can report temperatures in minuscule regions - such as a cluster of cells - with an error of about 0.1 degrees Celsius.

Mahesh Kumar Jain took charge as the fourth Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Mahesh Kumar Jain was the MD & CEO of IDBI Bank before being appointed as Deputy Governor of RBI. The government has appointed him as the Deputy Governor of the RBI for a term of three years. He succeeds SS Mundra who retired in August 2017. As Deputy Governor of RBI, Mahesh Kumar Jain will handle the Department of Banking Supervision, Department of Co-operative Banking Supervision, Department of Non-Banking Supervision, Central Security Cell, Department of Corporate Services including Document Management System, Rajbhasha Department, Consumer Education and Protection Department, Financial Inclusion and Development Department and Premises Department.

BVR Subrahmanyam assumed charge as Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir. B V R Subramanyam is a 1987 batch IAS officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre. He assumed charges from the outgoing Chief Secretary B B Vyas. B V R Subramanyam served as the Additional Chief Secretary Home under the Chhattisgarh Government. He has held positions like Director in the Union Commerce Ministry, Private Secretary to the then Prime Minister during 2004-2008, Senior Advisor with the World Bank from June 2008 to September 2011.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan had won a 52.54% share of the national vote and re-elected as the Turkish President, extending his 15-year grip on power. Erdogan has won several consecutive elections to become Turkey's longest-serving leader.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has launched the Rs 870-crore pilot project of Suryashakti Kisan Yojana (SKY) where farmers can generate electricity using solar energy and sell the surplus to the electric grid. The SKY Yojana is for farmers who are existing consumers of power companies. As per the new scheme, a farmer signing up for it will have to spend only 5 % amount of the total expenditure for installing the solar project (including solar panels and inverters). The central and state governments will bear 60% of share of total cost of the project and 35% share will be repaid by farmers in 7 years period.

As per directions of the Haryana's Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, all halogen, sodium bulbs and tube lights will be replaced with energy-efficient LED bulbs and tube lights. The use of incandescent lamps and purchase of sodium vapour lamps by government sector, government aided sector, boards and corporations and autonomous bodies have already been banned.

Southern Railways will impose a fine of INR 2,000 on passengers who take a selfie in front of trains at railway stations or while standing on the footboard. People found repeating the offence will be imprisoned for six months. The initiative aims to cut down on selfie-related train mishaps which have grown recently.

Indian swimmer Sandeep Sejwal put up an impressive performance to clinch the gold medal in men's 50m breaststroke event at the Singapore National Swimming Championships in Singapore.

Archer Deepika Kumari won her first individual gold medal in six years at the Salt Lake World Cup, in the USA. She defeated Germany's Michelle Kroppen in the recurve final. The win ensured Deepika will represent the country at the season-ending Archery World Cup Final in Samsun, Turkey in October 2018. In six appearances at the Archery World Cup, Deepika had come back with silver medals in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015 but this time she finally got the Gold.

Datuk Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus will be appointed as the Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) governor for a term of five years from July 1, 2018 till June 30, 2023. Students from KCJ College of Engineering, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, have won first prize at the Smart India Hackathon 2018 Hardware Edition under the 'Smart Communication' category conducted at the CSIR-CEERI in Pilani, Rajasthan. Students from KCJ College of Engineering had made a device that helps school children with kinesthetic dyslexia who find it difficult to read, write or interpret words, letters and other symbols. Second prize was won by a team from Bengaluru and third spot was secured by a team from Delhi for finding a solution to the problem of lost baggage at airports. It was organised by the Union Human Resources Development Ministry to encourage creativity among youth and promote the digital India initiative.

Women in Saudi Arabia have been legally allowed to drive for the first time in the history of one of the most conservative countries. On June 4, Saudi Arabia issued the first driving license to women, as Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud officially announced in September 2017 to allow women to drive. Driving schools for women have been set up in five cities in the kingdom.
