Aptitude - Time and Distance - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Time and Distance - General Questions (Q.No. 3)
3.
If a person walks at 14 km/hr instead of 10 km/hr, he would have walked 20 km more. The actual distance travelled by him is:
50 km
56 km
70 km
80 km
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let the actual distance travelled be x km.

Then, x = x + 20
10 14

14x = 10x + 200

4x = 200

x = 50 km.

Friends, we should first understand the concept.

The man walks at 10kmph covered certain distance X. Then man instead of walks at 14kmph covered certain distance X. So both are covering the distance x first. Then he will take an extra time to cover 20km.

The Time difference
D is=20km.

Formula=D = D[a/a-b].
=20(10/4)=50km.

Time = Distance/Speed.

For 10km/h,
T=D/S.
Let the actual distance be x.

Therefore T= x/10 -------> Eq 1
For 14km/h,
T=D/S
T= x+20/14 ------> Eq 2

By equation 1 and 2.
x/10=x+20/14,
x=50.

I am understanding now. Thanks All.

@All.

14-10 = 4km/hr.
4km/hr = 20km travelled.
so 1hr = 5km,
then 10km/hr = 10 * 5 = 50.

You make it very easy to understand. Thanks.

@All.

According to me;

1st hour 10 = 14,
2nd hour 20 = 28,
3rd hour 30 = 42,
4th hour 40 = 56,
5th hour 50 = 70,

IF IN ONE HOUR HE IS DOING 14, THEN IN THE FIFTH HOUR (14*5=60) TIMES UP.

At speed 10 kmph he reaches 50 km at the same time if he travels in 14 kmph he would reach 70 km.

So, 70 - 50 = 20. I think u got it.

OR
14-10 = 4km/hr.
4km/hr = 20km travelled.
so 1hr = 5km,
then 10km/hr = 10 * 5 = 50.

Both are travelling at different speed but in the same amount of time.
So, if x is the distance travelled by A, then the time taken by A is x/10. then time = distance/speed.
And time taken by B is (x+20)/14.
Both A and B took same time so x/10=(x+20)/14.
By solving we get x=50.

Why is there x/10?

The another method.

Let's, time will be t.
so, 14t-10t=20,
or. 4t=20,
or, t=5.
so, the total distance is 5*0 = 50.
