Alfred buys an old scooter for Rs. 4700 and spends Rs. 800 on its repairs. If he sells the scooter for Rs. 5800, his gain percent is:
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Cost Price (C.P.) = Rs. (4700 + 800) = Rs. 5500.
Selling Price (S.P.) = Rs. 5800.
Gain = (S.P.) - (C.P.) = Rs.(5800 - 5500) = Rs. 300.
Gain % = | ![]() |
300 | x 100 | ![]() |
= 5 | 5 | % |
5500 | 11 |

How did 5.5/11 come?
Gain% = (300 x 100)/5500
= 30000/5500
= 300/55
= 60/11
= 5.45454545....
= 5(5/11) [ after converting 5.4545.. into vulgar fraction]
Note: What is a vulgar fraction?
A fraction in the form of one integer divided by another, non-zero, integer.
A vulgar fraction is one where the numerator (the number on the top) is bigger than the denominator (the number on the bottom). More pedantically, the absolute value of the numerator is bigger than the absolute value of the denominator.
I hope you understand. Have a nice day!

Simple logic.
If the c.p of 20 articles is = 20rupees,
So 20=100%.
The s.p of x articles is = 20rupees,
if gain% is 25% it means 20 rupees of c.p is = 125%.
We need to understand that 5 is 25% of 20.
So 100%+25%=20+5,
125%=25.
Now we can find the s.p of 1 articles
s.p 25÷20 c.p =1.25.
The s.p of 1 articles is =1.25.
Now we can find the sold (x) articles those make 20 rupees
20÷1.25=16.
Sold articles is =16 Ans,
And.
20*1.25=25,
25 = 125% of c.p 20.
20÷1.25=16.
Sold articles is =16 Ans,
And.
20*1.25=25,
25 = 125% of c.p 20.

Gain% = (Gain * 100) / CP.
Where Gain = SP - CP.
Here CP = 4700 the price he bought the item but in the question, it is said that he spends 800 More on repair, therefore total amount he spends is CP + repairing cost = 4700 + 800 = 5500.
Therefore CP becomes 5500 (Amount he spent for purchasing as well as for repairing)
SP = 5800 (Given).
Gain = SP - CP.
=> 5800 - 5500 = 300.
Gain% = (Gain * 100) / CP.
=> (300 * 100) / 5500,
=> 300 / 55,
=> 5.454545%.

Cost price = 4700+800 = 5500.
Selling price =580.
Gain = Selling price - cost price = 5800 - 5500=300.
Gain%=(300/5500*100) %.
If we divide 300/5500 then we get 3/55(here zeroes are cancelling. Numerator and denominator are same we can cancel directly).
Now, 3/55*100,
3*100/55,
Here we can divide 100/55 by 5 then we get 20/11,
Go back to step,
Then 3*20/11,
We get, 60/11 write it in mixed fraction,
That is, 5 (5/11)%.
Selling price =580.
Gain = Selling price - cost price = 5800 - 5500=300.
Gain%=(300/5500*100) %.

@Aamir Your answer is Here:
Table purchase price - 480.
Spent 20% of purchase price - 480*20/100 = 96.
Now table cost price is = Purchase+spent(480+96)=576.
To make a profit of 144.
He need to sell it = CP + Profit amount.
=576+144=720.
profit percentage on purchase price = profit value*100/purchase price
=144*100/480=25%.
Carpenter getting 25% profit on purchase price.

Let's forget about formula.
Its given, total cost price(original cost + repair) = 5500.
selling price = 5800.
Difference = 300.
Thus, we need to find how much 300 be of 5800.
Let, 10% of 5800 = 580. So options C& D are eliminated since 300 is less than and not equal to 580.
Coming to option A, 1% of 5800 = 58(50 + 8).
Thus 4(58) = 236.
So the ultimate option be B.

As the cost price is 4700 Rs, and another amount has spend on its repairs i.e 800 Rs. So, total money spent by the person is Rs 5500(4700+800).
Now he sells it for Rs 5800.
SP = Rs 5800.
Profit= 5800-5500=> Rs 300 (he earns as profit).
P% = (Profit/CP) *100.
= (300/5500) *100.
And you get the required results by calculation 60/11. Option B :) :D.

If a man buys 1 lt of milk for Rs.12 and mixes it with 20% water and sells it for Rs.15, then what is the percentage of gain? Please solve this.
Pipe A can fill a tank in 30 mins and Pipe B can fill it in 28 mins. If 3/4th of the tank is filled by Pipe B alone and both are opened, how much time is required by both the pipes to fill the tank completely.

Cost price of the scooter = Rs. 4700.
As Rs. 800 is spent on repairing, the total C.P is Rs.4700+Rs.800(i.e. Rs.5500).
Now, he sold it at Rs. 5800.
Profit = S.P - C.P.(i.e. Rs. 5800 - Rs. 5500)
= Rs. 300.
Since, profit %= Profit/C.P × 100.
= 5800 - 5500/5800 × 100,
= 60/11% > 5 5/11%.
Hence, the required answer is 5 5/11 %.
As Rs. 800 is spent on repairing, the total C.P is Rs.4700+Rs.800(i.e. Rs.5500).
