The average age of husband, wife and their child 3 years ago was 27 years and that of wife and the child 5 years ago was 20 years. The present age of the husband is:
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Sum of the present ages of husband, wife and child = (27 x 3 + 3 x 3) years = 90 years.
Sum of the present ages of wife and child = (20 x 2 + 5 x 2) years = 50 years.
Husband's present age = (90 - 50) years = 40 years.

Let the present age of husband,wife and child be x yrs
3 yrs ago their was x-3
x-3=27
x=30
the sum of their age is 90
5 yrs ago the avg age of wife n child was 20yrs
their present avg age=20+5=25
so,the sum of their present age is 25*2=50
the present age of husband =90-50=40
3 yrs ago their was x-3
x-3=27
x=30
the sum of their age is 90
5 yrs ago the avg age of wife n child was 20yrs
their present avg age=20+5=25
so,the sum of their present age is 25*2=50
the present age of husband =90-50=40

3 years ago,their avg is 27.
((h-3)+(w-3)+(c-3))/3=27
h+w+c=90.(present)
5 years ago w & c is 20.
((w-5)+(c-5))/2=20
w+c=50.(present)
(h+w+c)-(w+c)=40.
h=40 years
((h-3)+(w-3)+(c-3))/3=27
h+w+c=90.(present)
5 years ago w & c is 20.
((w-5)+(c-5))/2=20
w+c=50.(present)
(h+w+c)-(w+c)=40.
h=40 years

This is ramya from vizag,can i solve the problem as below as per question,
present ages of hus=h;wife=w;child=c;
---> 3 years ago it was said the avg ages of the hus,wife,child was 27 years.so,
((h-3)+(w-3)+(c-3))/3=27;
so solving it i got h+w+c=90;--->(a)
and given 5 years ago wife and childs age avg=20years so,
i took((w-5)+(c-5))/2=20;solving it i got w+c=50;-->(B)
on solving (a)&(b) i got h age as 40years,can this procedure be correct??
please do reply me?

IN 2nd expression
{y+5(10)}/6 is wrong i think .
it has to be y*10+5*10 divided by 5 i think because father has died so only 5 members will be ther ..

@vinod ..
h+w+c - w+c =husbands age
27*3 here 27 is average age and 3 is the number (sum is avg*n )
and 3*3 here we are taking after 3 years and into(*) 3 munbers.

The solution for your problem:
Lets take the age of father 10 yrs ago as x.
Then rest of the 5 members 10 yrs ago as y.
Now the mean age 10 yrs ago is = (x + y)/6 --(1)
and now as father is dead and all the ages of the other 5 members has risen by 10 each.
So mean age now =(y + 5(10))/6 ---(2)
Equating (1) and (2): (x+y)/6 = (y+50)/6
Be solving the above, we get x = 50.
So present age when he died
= x + 10
= 60 yrs.
