In each of the questions below consists of a question and two statements numbered I and II given below it. You have to decide whether the data provided in the statements are sufficient to answer the question. Read both the statements and

  • (A) If the data in statement I alone are sufficient to answer the question, while the data in statement II alone are not sufficient to answer the question
  • (B) If the data in statement II alone are sufficient to answer the question, while the data in statement I alone are not sufficient to answer the question

  • (D) If the data given in both statements I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question and
  • (E) If the data in both statements I and II together are necessary to answer the question.

Question: What will be the total weight of 10 poles, each of the same weight ?

Statements:

  1. One-fourth of the weight of each pole is 5 kg.
  2. The total weight of three poles is 20 kilograms more than the total weight of two poles.

Either I or II is sufficient
Neither I nor II is sufficient

Answer: Option
Explanation:

From I, we conclude that weight of each pole = (4x5) kg = 20 kg.

So, total weight of 10 poles = (20 x 10) kg = 200 kg.

From II, we conclude that:

Weight of each pole = (weight of 3 poles) - (weight of 2 poles) = 20 kg.

So, total weight of 10 pojes = (20 x 10) kg = 200 kg.

Explanation for statement II:

Let the weight of one pole be x

So x + x = a ( a is weight of two poles & each pole is of same weight)
i.e 2x = a

Similarly 3x = a + 20 ( total weight of three poles is 20 kilograms more than the total weight of two poles)

i.e 3x - 20 = a

So 2x = 3x - 20
x = 20.

So 2x = 3x-20.

x = 20.

I am not clear with this step and what is the meaning of total weight of three poles is 20 kilograms more than the total weight of two poles.

In statement I, what if the weight of the pole is not uniform throughout?

I mean: what if the total weight of the pole is not 4x5? There is a chance that the pole is tapered! Right?

Please correct me, If I am wrong.

For the second point, main point to look for is the weight of each pole are same, so the weight of 3 poles is more than the weight of two poles, it means they are giving the weight of each pole which is same, 20.

Here we are not combining both statements. Option C is right because by reading each statement individually we can conclude. Option E is only correct when we use two statements together to conclude.

St2: Wt of 3 poles = 20 kgs + wt of 2 poles.
wt of 3 poles - wt of 2 poles = 20,
wt of 1 pole = 20kgs,
finally , wt of 10 poles = 10 * 20 = 200 kgs.

Ans is both st1, st2 are sufficient.

Statement one is alone to solve this.

Logically if 1/4 of weight is 5 Kg then obviously 4/4 is 20 kg. So 20 kg is the weight of one pole then 200 kg is the weight of 10 poles.

Absolutely C is the correct answer. Because both statements are separate from each other.

So we consider only one statement to prove the question either 1 or 2.

1/4 of each pole weight = 5 kg.
Then 1 pole weight = 5*4= 20 kg.
1 pole weight is = 20 kg.
Then 10 poles weight= 10 pole*20 kg.
That is = 200 kg.
