8.

A girl counted in the following way on the fingers of her left hand : She started by calling the thumb 1, the index finger 2, middle finger 3, ring finger 4, little finger 5 and then reversed direction calling the ring finger 6, middle finger 7 and so on. She counted upto 1994. She ended counting on which finger ?

Explanation:

Clearly, while counting, the numbers associated to the thumb will be : 1, 9,17, 25,.....

i.e. numbers of the form (8n + 1).

Since 1994 = 249 x 8 + 2, so 1993 shall correspond to the thumb and 1994 to the index finger.

So selecting nearby value for getting remainder as 0, 1992/8=249 which represents the thumb finger. So adding 2 which will give 1994 & the selection will be middle finger.

Since she started counting from left side and counts back to right side 2 rounds will be completed. I that way 398 is exactly divisible by 2. At present her count should come from left side there remainder is 4 so count 1, 2, 3, 4 from our left side then you get the answer.

Therefore, 1994 represents index finger.

Last set is 249th set. Odd sets begin with Thumb & end at little finger (249x 8 + 1= 1993). Hence 1994 will end at Ring finger.

So, after counting 284 time on the same hand, she starts counting again and 1994 will come on the 6th place, that is the ring finger.

So due to 8th count count we take as 8n. And for first time we start count from thumb and for remaining all we start from index finger, so we add 1 to it. Then expression becomes 8n+1.

Number close to 1994(given in question) that is divisible by 8 is 1992. i.e) 1992/8 = 249..reminder 0...from this statement it can be written as 8*n, i.e) 8*249=1992. Now, 1993/8 gives a reminder of 1, from this statement it can be written in the form of 8*n+1 as (8*249+1). So it comes on thumbs. And the next number, 1994 comes on index finger.
