Torque transmitted by a solid shaft: (pie)/16*(tau)*D^3.

(Here D is given 100).

Torque transmitted by a hollow shaft: (pie)/16*(tau)*((D^4 - d^4))/D.

(Here D = outer diameter = 100; d = inner diameter = 50).

Solve the above and you will get 15/16.

Actually, as per the direct formula.

The Ratio of torque in case of hollow and solid shafts subjected to the same maximum shear stress.

T(hollow)/T(solid) = (D^4 - d^4)/D^4.
If you substitute in this formula you get exactly 15/16.

Strength of shaft depends upon the section modulus of shaft i.e. π/16 d^3.
Put the values of dia and compare the results.
