Study the following table and answer the questions.

Classification of 100 Students Based on the Marks Obtained by them in Physics and Chemistry in an Examination.

Subject Marks out of 50
40 and above 30 and above 20 and above 10 and above 0 and above
Physics9328092100
Chemistry4216681100
Average (Aggregate)7277387100

2.
If at least 60% marks in Physics are required for pursuing higher studies in Physics, how many students will be eligible to pursue higher studies in Physics?
27
32
34
41
Answer: Option
Explanation:

We have 60% of 50 = ( 60 x 50 ) = 30.
100

Therefore Required number

= No. of students scoring 30 and above marks in Physics

Why people of 40 and above are not qualified ?

Znachfrage said:   1 decade ago
Ok I got it, the number of 40+ marks is already included in the 30+ marks.

Thanks @Znachfrage your point helped me in this solution.

Are student who have got more than 40 marks not to be counted. ?

Priyaa said:   1 decade ago
Then I guess students with 20, 10. 0 above must also be counted.

Megha said:   1 decade ago
It is never mentioned that the students who have scored 40 and above are to considered in 30 and above. It may best be a inference. The question should be changed to 'least number of students likely o pursue higher studies in Physics'.

@Megha.
There they mentioned indirectly that 30 and above mean that the marks are included from 30 to 50 I think you understood there exists difference between 30-40 and 30 and above.

This is the true example of testing your interpretation on tabular data. The total number of students are 100. Total of number of students given under each marks margin column exceeds 100, this indicates that number of students in each column might or might not include the number of students of previous or next column depending upon the column headings. In short.......the number of 40+ marks is already included in the 30+ marks students

Answer is correct, because they said at least 60%; if we consider 40 mark column then they have 80%;and if that of 30 column is 60% (at least) ;Hence correct.
