Study the following table and answer the questions.
Classification of 100 Students Based on the Marks Obtained by them in Physics and Chemistry in an Examination.
| Subject | Marks out of 50 | ||||
| 40 and above | 30 and above | 20 and above | 10 and above | 0 and above | |
| Physics | 9 | 32 | 80 | 92 | 100 |
| Chemistry | 4 | 21 | 66 | 81 | 100 |
| Average (Aggregate) | 7 | 27 | 73 | 87 | 100 |
2.
If at least 60% marks in Physics are required for pursuing higher studies in Physics, how many students will be eligible to pursue higher studies in Physics?
Answer: Option
Explanation:
| We have 60% of 50 = | ![]() |
60 | x 50 | ![]() |
= 30. |

Look as the accumulative frequency, as a total number of students is 100. So it adds one over the other then the answer is 32.

Actually, those students who got 30 and above (including those 9stds scoring above 40) are in 60 and above,
See;
30/50 * 100 = 60%
The table shows 32.
See;
30/50 * 100 = 60%
The table shows 32.

If we look carefully at the word structure given to us, it clearly states that ‘ at least’ 60% of the score must be obtained to pursue a higher grade in Physics.
In the case that the question stated accumulative data, then the correct answer would have been 32.
However, the word choice and framing of the question remain vague.
Thus, the answer can be both 41 and 32.
