Study the following table and answer the questions.

Classification of 100 Students Based on the Marks Obtained by them in Physics and Chemistry in an Examination.

Subject Marks out of 50
40 and above 30 and above 20 and above 10 and above 0 and above
Physics9328092100
Chemistry4216681100
Average (Aggregate)7277387100

2.
If at least 60% marks in Physics are required for pursuing higher studies in Physics, how many students will be eligible to pursue higher studies in Physics?
27
32
34
41
Answer: Option
Explanation:

We have 60% of 50 = ( 60 x 50 ) = 30.
100

Therefore Required number

= No. of students scoring 30 and above marks in Physics

      = 32

Let me make this simple for everyone.

Total Students : 100.

Let's understand the table from right to left.
For any subject (Chem/Phy).
0 and above : 100 (Includes all students) who scored 0 or more.
10 and above : Includes all students scored 10, 10+ , except previous ones.
20 and above : Includes all students scored 20,20+ except previous ones.
30 and above : Includes all students scored 30,30+ except previous ones.
40 and above : Includes all students scored 40,40+ except previous ones.

Now according to above question;

Students eligible are 32, which includes all the students scored 30,30+

Hence we are not adding another 9 students as they are already included in this column,
It's just they scored more marks than others and listed in leftmost column.

This is the true example of testing your interpretation on tabular data. The total number of students are 100. Total of number of students given under each marks margin column exceeds 100, this indicates that number of students in each column might or might not include the number of students of previous or next column depending upon the column headings. In short.......the number of 40+ marks is already included in the 30+ marks students

@Amruta.

Total mark given is 50.

As we have to calculate percentage, we have to convert it to 100.

Students having at least 60% are eligible for higher studies.

i.e. 60/100=30/50.

i.e. Students who got at least 30 marks in physics are eligible to perform higher studies.

Look at the table for number of students who got 30 and above in physics.

Clearly the answer is 32.

Friends, 32 is correct answer. It's sum of 40 and 30. See below calculation:

40 and above: 9 - 0 = 9
30 and above: 32 - 9 = 23
20 and above: 80 - 32 = 48
10 and above: 92 - 80 = 12
0 and above: 100 - 92 = 8

Total Student = (9 + 23 + 48 + 12 + 8) = 100 student.

So, 32 is a sum of 40 and 30 (and above) students who got at least 60% marks in Physics.

Here 30 and above means 30-50 ie.40 and above data is also included in the 30 and above data.so during calculation if one will include 40 and above data.It means 40 and above data included twice and thus the answer will be wrong.

If the data would have been 30-40 and 40-50 separately then including both the data would have been the correct step.

The answer should come 41.
Since 'atleast 60%' means to include the student who scored more then 30 marks,
Which we have 32 stds. Who scored in thirty and 9 stds who scored in fourth,

So, 32 + 9 = 41.

Note: At least, 30 marks means; (greater than 30), which is inclusive of all students who scored from 30 to 50.

Friends, 32 is correct because look at the chart it is mentioned that "30 and above" i.e. all the students whose marks are between 30 - 50 are already included in it. Had it been 30 - 40 and then 40 - 50 then we should have considered 32 + 9 = 41.

Hope you get it.

First of all I got the doubt that, why 40 and above were not included in the answer but later I came to know by above comments that, they were already included in 30 and above.

So, if that's true then whats the need to add 40 and above column in the table.

@All.

We have to understand here, that, 30 and above means numbers above 30 i.e., 40 and above are also included here. So 32 students have scored 30 above and out of 30 students, 9 students have scored 40 above.

So the correct answer is 32.

We have given marks out of 50 and given at least 60% marks in Physics are required for pursuing higher studies in Physics so 60% of 50 = (60x50/100) = 30.

And No.of students scoring 30 and above marks in Physics are 32 so answer is 32.
