Various Expenditures (in percentage) Incurred in Publishing a Book

4.
If 5500 copies are published and the transportation cost on them amounts to Rs. 82500, then what should be the selling price of the book so that the publisher can earn a profit of 25%?
Rs. 187.50
Rs. 191.50
Rs. 175
Rs. 180
Answer: Option
Explanation:

For the publisher to earn a profit of 25%, S.P. = 125% of C.P.

Also Transportation Cost = 10% of C.P.

Let the S.P. of 5500 books be Rs. x.

Then, 10 : 125 = 82500 : x     =>     x = Rs. ( 125 x 82500 ) = Rs. 1031250.
10

Therefore S.P. of one book = Rs. ( 1031250 ) = Rs. 187.50 .

Why we are adding 25% profit with 100% and why not with transport cost?

Anyone, Please explain.

Alternative Method:

Transportation Cost = 82500 (which is 10% of the total cost.)
Hence, total cost = 825000
Therefore, cost of 1 book = 825000/5500 = Rs.150

Now, SP is 25% more of this
Therefore, (150+25% of 150) = Rs. 187.5

See a simple solution:

5500 books transportation cost = 82500,

1 book transportation cost = ?

That would be 82500/5500 = 15.

From pie chart, it is given that for 1 book transportation cost is 10% of the total cost price of that book.

=> (10/100) * cp = 15.

Cost price of single book = 150,

(sp - cp/cp) * 100 = 25,

(sp - 150/150) * 100 = 25,

So, sp = 187.50.

Let's do it in a simple way.

10% = 82500.
125% = 82500/100 * 125.
= 1031250.
Now divide it by 550.
i.e. 1031220/550 = 187.50.
