Mumbai is hosting the Kimberley Process Intersessional Meeting 2026 from May 11 to May 14, 2026, under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. India assumed the Chair of the Kimberley Process on January 1, 2026, focusing on the theme of credibility, compliance, and consumer confidence in the natural diamond sector. The meeting includes representatives from 86 countries and the European Union. The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme was established to prevent conflict diamonds from entering legitimate global markets. India’s role as a major global hub for diamond cutting and polishing further strengthens its importance in the international diamond trade and regulatory framework.

The government of New Delhi launched an aftercare scheme aimed at supporting vulnerable youth transitioning out of child care institutions after reaching the age of 18. The initiative focuses on rehabilitation, financial support, emotional counselling, education, and vocational opportunities. A budget allocation of ₹3.5 crore was made for the 2026-27 financial year to implement the program effectively. The scheme operates under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, which emphasises the welfare and rehabilitation of children in need of care and protection. District and state-level committees will oversee the implementation and ensure individualised care plans for beneficiaries.

India’s first International Ophthalmology Research Conference, AIOS-AFOU 2026, is being held at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi on May 09 and 10, 2026. The conference is jointly organised by the Department of Ophthalmology at Army Hospital (Research & Referral) and the All-India Ophthalmological Society. The event focuses on advancements in ophthalmology and encourages collaboration between civil and military medical institutions. Renowned international experts and leading ophthalmologists from premier institutes such as AIIMS New Delhi, PGI Chandigarh, and LV Prasad Eye Institute are participating. The conference also highlights innovations in AI-driven eye diagnostics and modern ophthalmic research.

The 100th N-Gen Post Office in India was inaugurated at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong, Meghalaya, by Union Minister for Communications Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia on May 6, 2026. N-Gen Post Offices are modern postal hubs designed mainly for youth and students within educational institutions. These facilities provide services such as free Wi-Fi, QR-based payment systems, concessional parcel services, and dedicated student service counters. The Shillong branch is unique because it is operated entirely by women staff and incorporates eco-friendly local materials like bamboo and straw, reflecting sustainability and community participation in its design and development.

The seminar on Sustainable Spice Value Chains was organised in Kochi, Kerala, by the Consulate General of the Netherlands and the World Spice Organisation. The event focused on enhancing sustainability in the spice industry while addressing European regulations related to food safety, quality standards, and traceability. India plays a significant role in the global spice market by exporting more than 250 varieties of spices and value-added products to over 180 countries. The seminar also reviewed the progress of the National Sustainable Spices Program (NSSP), which supports sustainable cultivation practices among thousands of farmers involved in producing spices such as chilli, turmeric, coriander, cumin, and pepper.
