The Vriksharopan Abhiyan 2024 was launched on July 25, 2024, at Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) in Dhanbad by Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy. This initiative is part of the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" campaign and was carried out simultaneously across 300 locations in 47 districts within 11 coal/lignite-bearing states. The campaign aims to enhance green cover and involves extensive tree-planting efforts, reflecting the government's commitment to environmental conservation.

According to a recent report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), China led the world in forest area gains from 2010 to 2020, adding an impressive 1,937,000 hectares annually. Australia followed with an increase of 446,000 hectares. India ranked third globally, significantly contributing to forest area expansion by adding 266,000 hectares annually. These gains reflect substantial efforts in reforestation and land restoration by these countries, with China leading the way.

The Forest Survey of India (FSI) conducts a biennial assessment of the country's forest cover. According to the India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2021, the total forest cover is 7,13,789 square kilometres, which constitutes 21.71% of India's geographical area. This statistic highlights the extent of forested regions in the country, reflecting efforts towards forest conservation and management. Understanding these figures is crucial for environmental planning and policy-making aimed at maintaining and increasing forest cover to ensure ecological balance and sustainability.

Azerbaijan's COP29 has announced the Climate Finance Action Fund (CFAF) to support green projects in developing countries, specifically aiming to help member nations achieve the 1.5°C temperature target. This target is crucial for mitigating the severe impacts of climate change and aligns with international climate agreements. The CFAF, funded by contributions from fossil fuel producers and other sources, will focus on financing clean energy technology and enhancing climate resilience. UNESCO recently approved the designation of 11 new Biosphere Reserves across 11 countries. This brings the total number of sites in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves to 759, spanning 136 countries.
