Dileep Sanghani was elected as an At-Large Director to the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) Global Board for the 2026-2030 term on September 15, 2026. The election was finalised during the ICA General Assembly held at the Panama Convention Centre in Panama. A total of 116 voters representing 66 countries participated, with 16 cooperators from 16 countries elected to the Global Board. Dr Ariel Guarco was elected unopposed as ICA President, while Harsh Sanghani became President of the Youth Committee. Dileep Sanghani is also a former President of the National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI).

GIFT City secured the 37th position globally in the Global Financial Centres Index (GFCI 40) on September 17, 2026, improving by nine places from its previous 46th rank. It also secured the 26th position globally in the FinTech category. GIFT City entered the top 15 financial centres in the Asia-Pacific region and was the only Indian financial centre featured in that group. The GFCI 40 assessed 115 financial centres using 144 instrumental factors and 39,531 assessments. GIFT City is located in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, and serves as India’s first International Financial Services Centre (IFSC).

September 19 is observed as International Red Panda Day in 2026, falling on the third Saturday of September. The day aims to raise awareness about the endangered red panda and the threats it faces, including habitat loss, fragmentation, poaching, and entrapment. The red panda is scientifically known as Ailurus fulgens and is listed as an Endangered species on the IUCN Red List. Its natural habitat extends across parts of the Eastern Himalayas and China, including Sikkim, the Darjeeling hills, and Arunachal Pradesh in India. International Red Panda Day also encourages conservation, education, and habitat protection efforts.

Pawan Sehrawat replaced Tajinderpal Singh Toor as India’s male flag-bearer at the Asian Games opening ceremony. Sehrawat is an Indian kabaddi player and was part of the team that won the gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou. He is also a prominent player in the Pro Kabaddi League. The Indian Olympic Association cited technical reasons for the replacement of Toor. Shooter Manu Bhaker continued as the women’s flag-bearer alongside Sehrawat. Toor remained part of India’s athletics contingent and aimed for his third consecutive Asian Games gold medal in shot put.

Punjab and Haryana received India’s first-ever soil carbon payments for adopting regenerative agriculture. On September 17, 2026, payments worth ₹2.9 crore were initiated for more than 2,500 smallholder farmers in these two states. The Direct Benefit Transfer was launched at Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana. The payments were part of the ‘Aadi’ carbon programme launched by Grow Indigo in 2019 with technical guidance from ICAR. The initial phase covered 30,000 acres and generated 50,000 carbon credits. Individual farmers received payments ranging from ₹3,000 to ₹15,000 for verified improvements in soil carbon and reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) partnered with the Dubai Gold & Commodities Exchange (DGCX) on September 15, 2026, to modernise its market infrastructure through a next-generation integrated platform. The project includes trading, clearing, and surveillance capabilities designed to improve efficiency and future-proof DGCX operations. The technology stack includes TCS BaNCS for Market Infrastructure, Quartz for Surveillance, TCS BaNCS Securities Trading, and TCS Quartz Gateway. The platform supports energy, currencies, equities, bullion, and precious metals, while also enabling future expansion into emerging asset classes such as crypto and tokenised assets. TCS is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and was established in 1968.

India secured the 131st position out of 145 countries in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index 2026, with an overall gender parity score of 64.5%. India’s rank remained unchanged from the previous year, although its individual score improved. The country recorded 96.6% parity in educational attainment and 95.6% in health and survival. Political empowerment stood at 24.5%, while economic participation recorded 41.2% parity. Globally, 69.2% of the gender gap had been closed. The World Economic Forum first launched the Global Gender Gap Index in 2006 to measure gender parity across four major dimensions.

September 18 was observed as International Equal Pay Day in 2026. The day focuses on addressing unequal pay and promoting wage equality worldwide. It raises awareness about the gender pay gap, which refers to the average difference in earnings between men and women. International Equal Pay Day emphasises the importance of achieving equal pay for equal work as a universal standard. Factors contributing to earnings disparities include discriminatory recruitment and pay practices, gender-based occupational segregation, and unequal access to higher-paying jobs and leadership positions. The observance also encourages targeted policies and sustained efforts to reduce the gender pay gap.

Ahmedabad was the location where the NIELIT–Infineon Centre of Excellence (CoE) on Semiconductor Manufacturing was inaugurated on September 2026. The facility was established through a collaboration between the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) and Infineon Technologies. It focuses on backend semiconductor manufacturing, particularly Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP). The centre is designed to provide industry-oriented training to diploma holders, engineers, and technicians. Infineon Technologies supplied eight units of industry-grade manufacturing equipment. The initiative supports the India Semiconductor Mission by developing a skilled workforce for future semiconductor and OSAT facilities.
