August 14 is observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, also known as Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas. The Government of India declared August 14 as the day of remembrance in 2021 to honour the victims and survivors of the Partition of India in 1947. The observance recalls the immense human suffering caused by displacement, communal violence, loss of property, family separation, and destruction of livelihoods. The date precedes India’s Independence Day and highlights the sacrifices and hardships associated with Partition. Various exhibitions, memorial programmes, educational sessions, and discussions are held to preserve historical memories and promote communal harmony.

Skyroot Aerospace signed a multi-launch agreement with Kerala-based HEX20 on August 10, 2026, for three dedicated Vikram-series space missions. The missions are scheduled to begin in Q4 of 2027 and will support HEX20’s Earth-observation constellation, in-orbit payload demonstrations, and rideshare services for third-party spacecraft. The agreement follows Skyroot’s successful July 18, 2026, launch of Vikram-1, described as India’s first privately developed orbital-class rocket. Headquartered in Hyderabad, Skyroot Aerospace aims to increase its launch capacity to 12 missions annually. Vikram-1 uses in-house propulsion and composite structures designed for small-satellite launches.

Lebanon became the first Arab country and the first nation in the Middle East to formally abolish the death penalty on August 11, 2026. The Lebanese Parliament replaced all existing death sentences with life imprisonment. The country had maintained a de facto moratorium on executions since 2004, although dozens of people remained technically on death row. The abolition applies to crimes that were previously punishable by death, including murder and treason. The move provides lasting legal protection for the right to life and aligns Lebanon with international human rights trends. Lebanon’s capital is Beirut, and its official currency is the Lebanese Pound.

Gujarat approved the establishment of four Centres of Excellence to promote and expand natural farming across the state on August 11, 2026. The Gujarat Prakrutik Krishi Vikas Board will serve as the nodal agency for implementing and managing the scheme. Each centre will have the capacity to train 100 farmers at a time. Himachal Pradesh implemented a Widow and Orphan Cess on the sale of petrol and high-speed diesel from August 11, 2026. The cess is levied at 60 paise per litre and is collected at the first point of sale within the state. The measure was introduced under Section 6-A of the Himachal Pradesh Value Added Tax Act, 2005, following the passage of the Himachal Pradesh Value Added Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The revenue generated through the cess is specifically earmarked for the welfare of widows and orphaned children. Himachal Pradesh became the 18th state of India on January 25, 1971.

Indian para-cyclists secured a total of 12 Medals at the UCI Para Sport Denmark Grand Prix held in Odense, Denmark, from August 7 to 9, 2026. India’s medal tally consisted of 2 Gold, 5 Silver, and 5 Bronze medals. Arshad Shaikh of the MC2 category was the leading Indian performer, winning 6 medals, including 2 Gold, 3 Silver, and 1 Bronze. Kolkata was the location where the Indian Navy’s first Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV), Shruti (Yard 3037), was launched at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) facility on August 11, 2026. The vessel has been indigenously designed and built by GRSE. The NGOPV programme is being executed concurrently by GRSE in Kolkata and Goa Shipyard Limited in Goa. Shruti is designed for maritime surveillance, anti-piracy operations, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, offshore asset protection, and search and rescue missions. GRSE is a premier warship-building company under the Ministry of Defence and is headquartered in Kolkata.
