RM Nachammai created history by becoming the first woman to serve as the Chief Superintendent of an operational nuclear power plant in India. She assumed charge of Units 3 and 4 at the Kaiga Generating Station in Karnataka on 15 March 2026 under the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL). In this role, she is responsible for overseeing critical functions such as operations, maintenance, and engineering support at the reactor complex. The Kaiga plant is known for its strong safety standards and consistent performance in nuclear power generation. Her appointment marks a significant milestone for gender representation in India’s highly technical and traditionally male-dominated nuclear energy sector.

NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) launched the National Climate Stack Innovation Challenge to encourage technological and scientific solutions aimed at improving climate resilience in rural India. The initiative focuses on developing near-term climate hazard forecasting models and user-friendly dashboards that can support agriculture and rural livelihoods. It is built upon NABARD’s existing climate data platform, DiCRA (Data in Climate Resilient Agriculture), which aims to evolve into a comprehensive digital public infrastructure for climate intelligence. The challenge is organised in partnership with the Gates Foundation and Dalberg Advisors and offers prizes of ₹15 lakh, ₹10 lakh, and ₹5 lakh to promote innovative and scalable climate solutions.

Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and holds immense strategic importance in the Arctic region. Its geographic position makes it vital for monitoring polar routes, missile defence systems, and military operations in the High North. The United States has historically maintained a military presence there, particularly through installations used for early warning and space surveillance. Because of its geopolitical significance, discussions about influence, security cooperation, and strategic control have occasionally created diplomatic tensions between the United States and Denmark. These tensions, combined with growing Arctic competition, contributed to NATO strengthening its Arctic security posture through initiatives such as the Arctic Sentry mission framework.

Sambar deer, the largest deer species in South Asia, were recorded at unusually high elevations in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. Traditionally, these deer are found in the lower Shivalik hills, moist deciduous forests, and regions below about 2,000 metres. However, camera trap images documented their presence in higher-altitude areas such as the Kalatop–Khajjiar Wildlife Sanctuary and the Gamgul Wildlife Sanctuary, where elevations exceed 2,500 to 3,000 metres. This observation is significant because it suggests possible shifts in wildlife distribution patterns. Factors such as climate change, habitat changes, and improved protection of forest areas may be influencing the movement and habitat range of species like the sambar deer.

Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth has been appointed as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS) of the Indian Army with effect from April 1, 2026. Before this appointment, he served as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Southern Command based in Pune. The Southern Command is one of the largest geographical commands of the Indian Army and is responsible for military operations and infrastructure across several states in peninsular India. With extensive experience in operational, staff, and command roles, Lt Gen Seth succeeded Lieutenant General PP Singh in this prestigious position. The role of the Vice Chief of the Army Staff is the second-highest rank in the Indian Army hierarchy, just below the Chief of the Army Staff.

IIT Guwahati signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Coventry University Group (UK) to enhance collaboration in research, innovation, and academic exchange. The partnership focuses particularly on advancing developments in Artificial Intelligence and healthcare through joint initiatives. The agreement includes provisions for academic and research mobility, joint doctoral programmes, and collaborative research projects. A major theme of the partnership is “AI for One Health,” which aims to integrate artificial intelligence with healthcare systems to address societal health challenges. This collaboration builds on the earlier AI Impact Pre-Summit event hosted in January 2026, which emphasised using AI to strengthen healthcare integration and interdisciplinary innovation.

New Delhi witnessed the inauguration of India’s first fully operational Ring Metro with the completion of the Pink Line of the Delhi Metro network. The Majlis Park–Maujpur-Babarpur section completed the entire circular corridor of about 71.56 km, enabling seamless connectivity across various parts of the city without requiring frequent line changes. The project includes significant infrastructure such as a new bridge over the Yamuna River and a double-decker viaduct that carries both metro tracks and a road flyover. Alongside this, a key stretch of the Magenta Line was also inaugurated to improve connectivity in North Delhi. These developments aim to reduce congestion, improve commuting efficiency, and strengthen the capital’s public transportation system.

Gary Kirsten, a former South African international cricketer and experienced coach, has been appointed as the head coach of the Sri Lanka Men’s national cricket team beginning on April 15, 2026, for a two-year term ending on April 14, 2028. He is widely respected for his calm leadership style and strong emphasis on team discipline and mental conditioning. Kirsten previously achieved major coaching success with India, guiding the team to victory in the 2011 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and helping them reach the No.1 Test ranking. L&T Finance introduced the ‘Spoorthi’ programme to support and empower women entrepreneurs by offering specialised financial products such as home loans and loans against property (LAP). The initiative aims to encourage women-led businesses and improve access to credit for women who are running or co-running enterprises or professional ventures. Under the programme, eligible applicants can benefit from extended loan tenures of up to 25 years for home loans and LAP, along with flexible eligibility norms such as higher debt-to-income ratios. These features are designed to provide greater financial flexibility, enabling women entrepreneurs to invest in property ownership, expand businesses, and strengthen their economic participation.

Lakshadweep, located in the Arabian Sea, faces persistent freshwater shortages due to limited groundwater reserves, salinity intrusion, and heavy reliance on seasonal rainfall. To address these challenges, the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) has implemented advanced solutions such as Low Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) plants across several islands. These plants utilise the temperature difference between warm surface water and cold deep-sea water to produce drinking water. Additionally, India’s first Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC)-powered desalination facility is being developed in Kavaratti. This project aims to generate electricity and potable water simultaneously, reduce dependence on diesel-based power, and enhance long-term water and energy security for the islands.
