In a theory it states that beam linear before application of load (self weight is neglected) so linear is correct.

If the beam having no external load then it would not be bend. So shape always will be liner. And self weight will be act as udl but it does not change the shape because beam carries its weight without any bending.

If the beam having no external load then self weight will be act as udl throughout the entire span, for that reason the BM diagram will be parabola.
