Aptitude - Time and Work - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Time and Work - General Questions (Q.No. 6)
6.
If 6 men and 8 boys can do a piece of work in 10 days while 26 men and 48 boys can do the same in 2 days, the time taken by 15 men and 20 boys in doing the same type of work will be:
4 days
5 days
6 days
7 days
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let 1 man's 1 day's work = x and 1 boy's 1 day's work = y.

Then, 6x + 8y = 1 and 26x + 48y = 1 .
10 2

Solving these two equations, we get : x = 1 and y = 1 .
100 200

(15 men + 20 boy)'s 1 day's work = 15 + 20 = 1 .
100 200 4

15 men and 20 boys can do the work in 4 days.

Small Logic, let's assume:

26+48 =74 peoples has done their work in 2 days.
74/2 = 37;

So 37 peoples can do the work in 4 days.
20+15 = 35;

Approximately 35 peoples also can do in 4 days.

@Meera.

In the first solution you took it x value as 1/10 but it is 1/100. Please elaborate.

Hi guys anyone help me please this step:

Solving these two equations, we get : x = 1/100 and y = 1200.

(15 men + 20 boy)'s 1 day's work = (15/100 + 20/200) = 1/4.

10 (6m + 8b) = 2 (26m + 48b).

That mean 1man = 2boys.

As the total work is 10 (6m + 8b) so put 1m = 2b from above equation.

You will get 10 (20) than mean 200 md work.

If 15 men & 20 boys thn total number in terms of men would be 50.

So 200/50 = 4 days.

Hello all, I will show you how to obtain X & Y in above question:

Here we have two equations:

6x+8y = 1/10..........(i) & 26x+48y = 1/2..........(ii).

Divide (i) by (ii) we get,

6x+8y/26x+48Y = 1/10 X 2/1 (Divide sing on changing to multiply sing inverses the quantities).

Two 2 common.

2(3x+4y)/2(13x+24y) = 1/5 (cancel 2 in both nominator & denominator).

3x+4y/13x+24y = 1/5.

On cross multiplication we get,

15x+20y=13x+24y on rearranging x & y variable on either sides we get,

15x-13x = 24y-20y.
2x = 4y.

x = 4y/2 => x = 2y,

Now substitute the value of x in equation.........(i).

6x+8y = 1/10 =>
6X2y+8y = 1/10.

12y+8y = 1/10 =>
20y = 10 or y = 1/200.

Hence x = 2y i.e. x = 2 x 1/200.

i.e x = 1/100.

Hi @Meera,

If we multiply equation(1) by 6 we will get:

6x+8y = 1/10 ---> 36x+48y = 3/5.

My question is how it comes 3/5?

2x+3y = 1/10 ----- (1).
3x+2y = 1/8 ------ (2).

We want to find: 2x+1y = ?---- (3).

Any one can solve this answer is:

10(2x+3y) = 8(3x+2y).

20x+30y = 24x+16y.

4x = 14y.
2x = 7y.

So 2x+3y = 10 ----- (1).

7y+3y = 10.
10y = 10.

2x+1y = ?---- (3).

7y+1y = 8y.

So 10yx10/8y = 25/2.

= 12 1/2 (Ans).

Strength*time/work = 1.

14*10/w = 74*2/w = 35*x/w.

'w' in the denominator will get cancel.

So 140 = 148 = 35x.
So equate one divisible no.

140 = 35x.
x = 4.

4 days will be the answer.
