Aptitude - Time and Distance - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Time and Distance - General Questions (Q.No. 2)
2.
An aeroplane covers a certain distance at a speed of 240 kmph in 5 hours. To cover the same distance in 1 hours, it must travel at a speed of:
300 kmph
360 kmph
600 kmph
720 kmph
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Distance = (240 x 5) = 1200 km.

Speed = Distance/Time

Speed = 1200/(5/3) km/hr.     [We can write 1 hours as 5/3 hours]

Required speed = 1200 x 3 km/hr = 720 km/hr.

Give:
S1 = 240kmph.
T1 = 5 hours.
T2 = 1 1/2 hours = 5/3 hours.
D1=D2.

To Find:
S2 = ?
Solution:
D = S x T.
D1 = D2.
So, S1 x T1 = S2 x T2.
240 x 5 = S2 x 5/3.
S2 = (240 x 5 x 3 )/5.

Please Explain how and why the reciprocal became 5/3 to 3/5. Someone, could you explain it?

Distance are same. So, we can write;
D1 = D2.
S1*T1 = S2*T2.
240*5 = S2*5/3,
S2 = 240*3,
S2 = 720kmph.

1(2/3) is a mixed fraction.
= 1*2/3.

= Now we have to multiply denominator to 1 (1*3)
=3 + 2/3 = 5/3.

In question it's given in mixed fraction, therefore it will be converted into fraction i.e 5/3 hrs.
(3*1)+2=5.
Fraction = 5/3hrs.

1 (2/3) = (1*3(denominator)+3(numerator))/3 = 5/3.

Distance = S x T
= 240 * 5.
= 1200 KM/hr.
SPEED = D/T.
1 2/3 = (1*2+3)/3 = 5/3.
S =1200 / 5/3.
=1200 * 3/5.
= 720 Km/Hr.

Distance = speed × time.
D = 240kmph × 5hrs
D = 1200km.

Then,
Speed = d÷t.
S = 1200km ÷ 1 2/3 hrs.
S = 720kmph.
