Discussion Forum : Time and Distance - General Questions (Q.No. 2)
2.
An aeroplane covers a certain distance at a speed of 240 kmph in 5 hours. To cover the same distance in 1 hours, it must travel at a speed of:
300 kmph
360 kmph
600 kmph
720 kmph
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Distance = (240 x 5) = 1200 km.

Speed = Distance/Time

Speed = 1200/(5/3) km/hr.     [We can write 1 hours as 5/3 hours]

Required speed = 1200 x 3 km/hr = 720 km/hr.

Here 1+2/3=5/3.

It was given that speed=dis/time,
so, speed= 1200/(5/3),
=1200*3/5,
=720kmph.

Guys, it was 1+2/3, not 1x2/3.

And it's not 1+2/3, it is 1*2/3 which means 1 hour and 2/3 minutes.
1*2/3 evaluates to (3*1+2)/3=5/3 hrs.

On the first, the trail the aeroplane cross the distance in 5 hours at the speed of 240 km/hr.

For the same distance in 1(2/3) hours to resolve this cross multiplication (3*1*2-3= 3 hr).
So we have to multiply 240*3 to get the value of second trail speed is 720 km/hr.

They said 1 hr. Why are you considering 1 (2/3)?

Keep it simple.

The distance = speed * time.
Therefore let speed be x now compare.
240*5=5/3*x.
240*5*3=5*x.
x=240*3.
x=720.

Fundamenta Formula : D=S*T.

Here.

S=240 kmph, T=3 hrs we can find D=240*5=1200.
To find S, S =D/T i.e. (1200*3) /5=720kmph.

Speed = Distance/Time.
= 1200 ÷ 5/3,
= 1200X3/5,
= 3600/5,
= 720.

How come 5/3 here? Please tell me.

Given that->d=240kmph*5h = 1200,
t=3+2/3=5/3.
s=d/t.
s=1200/(5/3)=1200*3/5=7200.
