Aptitude - Time and Distance - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Time and Distance - General Questions (Q.No. 2)
2.
An aeroplane covers a certain distance at a speed of 240 kmph in 5 hours. To cover the same distance in 1 hours, it must travel at a speed of:
300 kmph
360 kmph
600 kmph
720 kmph
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Distance = (240 x 5) = 1200 km.

Speed = Distance/Time

Speed = 1200/(5/3) km/hr.     [We can write 1 hours as 5/3 hours]

Required speed = 1200 x 3 km/hr = 720 km/hr.

Actually, I can't understand that why we put distance=1200 km/hr and how?

Akhil Reddy said:   9 years ago
I can solve in this way without formulae.

1.2/3 = 1.66.
240 km 5hrs.
Ans :-
5/1.66 = 3.0
So, 240 (3) = 720kmph.

Aeroplane travels total of 1200km to cover same distance in 1 hour it should travel wit 1200 kmph right but how come 720 kmph?

I want the explanation.

In the question, time is 1 2/3 hours, not one hour so we take it as 5/3 and get the answer as 720.

What is the formula of distance? Please tell me.

Sudha said:   8 years ago
Speed=distance÷time.

So, we substuite those values.

S = 1200/5/3.but why should change 5/3 as3/5.please tell me, I get confused.

Why we do 5/3 and question is for 1 hour?

Why everyone doing fraction, it is just simply asked how much speed in 1 hour if some purpose is there for doing 5/3 then explain me.

@Sudha, @Satish.

S = 1200/5/3 is correct.
S = 1200*3/5 just for calculation 3is multiplied with 1200.

distance const d=c ,here s1t1=s2t2.

240*5÷5÷3=720kmph.

Why should we convert 5/3 to 3/5?

Please anyone explain me.
