Discussion Forum : Time and Distance - General Questions (Q.No. 1)
1.
A person crosses a 600 m long street in 5 minutes. What is his speed in km per hour?
3.6
7.2
8.4
10
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Speed = 600 m/sec.
5 x 60

   = 2 m/sec.

Converting m/sec to km/hr (see important formulas section)

   = 2 x 18 km/hr
5

   = 7.2 km/hr.

Km defines distance.
Hr defines time.

Question is to find speed?
S = km/hr.
1. To find m to km.
1 Meter to 1000km.
600Meter is 600/1000 = 0.6km.

2. To find min to hr.
60 min =1hr.
5/60 = 0.08hr.

Finally.
S = KM/hr
= 0.6/0.08
= 7.5km/hr.

s = d/t.
600/300 m/sec,
= 2 m/sec.
2 * 18/5 km/hr.
s = 36/5 kmph.

Simple way to solve this;

Distance = 600m = 600/1000 = 0.6Km.
Time = 5 minutes = 0.08 hours.
Speed = ?.

Now apply the speed formula.
Speed = Distance/Time.
Put value;
Speed = 0.6km/0.08h.
= 7.5km/h.

@All.

Here is my solution:

600m in 5 minutes.
1hr = 60 minutes,
5 ÷ 60 = 12,
12 x 600 = 7200.
Answer is 7.2 km/hr.

1000 m = 1 km.
60 min = 1 hr,
In, 60 min × 600 m = 36000 m.
36000 m = 36 km.
Now, 36 (km) ÷ 5 (min) = 7.2.
So, 7.2 Km/hr.

s = d/t.
d = 600m,
t = 5min,
s = 600/5 * 60,
= 2 m/sec.
2 * 18/5.
= 7.2.

The distance travelled is 600m.
He takes 5 min.
Convert min into sec: 5 x 60 = 300 sec.
Speed in m/s = speed = distance/time = 600/300 = 2m/s,
Convert m/s to km/h = 1m/s is considered as 3.6km/h.
So, 2 x 3.6
= 7.2km/h.
