In a mixture 60 litres, the ratio of milk and water 2 : 1. If this ratio is to be 1 : 2, then the quantity of water to be further added is:
Answer: Option
Explanation:
| Quantity of milk = | ![]() |
60 x | 2 | litres = 40 litres. |
| 3 |
Quantity of water in it = (60- 40) litres = 20 litres.
New ratio = 1 : 2
Let quantity of water to be added further be x litres.
| Then, milk : water = | ![]() |
40 | ![]() |
. |
| 20 + x |
| Now, | ![]() |
40 | ![]() |
= | 1 |
| 20 + x | 2 |
20 + x = 80
x = 60.
Quantity of water to be added = 60 litres.

2:1 ratio of 60 litre is 40 litre milk and 20 litre water.
i.e 40:20
so to get the ratio 1:2 we should have 40:80
hence we have to add 80-20 (i.e 60) litre of water.

The initial quantity of milk=(2/3)*90 = 60,
Initial quantity of water=(1/3)*90 = 30,
If the ratio is to be 2:3 the water to be added;
(60÷(30+x)) = 2/3,
X = 60.

If the ratio is to be 2:3 the water to be added;
(60÷(30+x)) = 2/3,
X = 60.

The ratio of milk and water in 60L is;
m=2.
w=1 (2+1)=3,
milk = 2/3, water=1/3.
milk in 60L = 2/3 * 60= 40L.
water in 60L = 1/3 * 60= 20L,
40:(20+60)=4:8= 1:2.
m=2.
w=1 (2+1)=3,
milk = 2/3, water=1/3.
milk in 60L = 2/3 * 60= 40L.
water in 60L = 1/3 * 60= 20L,
40:(20+60)=4:8= 1:2.

2x + x = 60,
x = 20.
Then milk =2*20 = 40,
water = 20.
New ratio=sum of mixtures(new)
1:2 = 40+20+x,
3x = 60+x,
x = 30.
Now, water to be added = 2 * 20 = 60.
x = 20.
Then milk =2*20 = 40,
water = 20.
New ratio=sum of mixtures(new)
1:2 = 40+20+x,
3x = 60+x,
x = 30.
Now, water to be added = 2 * 20 = 60.

This Question can also be solved as:
2x/x = 60,
X = 30.
New ratio is 1:2.
Where 1 part is milk.
Nd 2x is water put the value of x.
Hence water = 60.
2x/x = 60,
X = 30.
New ratio is 1:2.
Where 1 part is milk.
Nd 2x is water put the value of x.
Hence water = 60.

In question, they have mentioned if this ratio is to be..
Does that mean 2: 1 to be simply changed to 1:2 why did they link both? Please explain me.

Mixture = 60 litre
ratio is 2: 1 , so milk:water=40:20
New ration= 1: 2
so , 40lr means 1
and x lr means 2
then make cross mul
x = 40*2/1
x = 80 lr
ratio is 2: 1 , so milk:water=40:20
New ration= 1: 2
so , 40lr means 1
and x lr means 2
then make cross mul
x = 40*2/1
x = 80 lr
