Salaries of Ravi and Sumit are in the ratio 2 : 3. If the salary of each is increased by Rs. 4000, the new ratio becomes 40 : 57. What is Sumit's salary?
Rs. 17,000
Rs. 20,000
Rs. 25,500
Rs. 38,000
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let the original salaries of Ravi and Sumit be Rs. 2x and Rs. 3x respectively.

Then, 2x + 4000 = 40
3x + 4000 57

57(2x + 4000) = 40(3x + 4000)

6x = 68,000

3x = 34,000

Sumit's present salary = (3x + 4000) = Rs.(34000 + 4000) = Rs. 38,000.

Why every one is taking this new ratio as 40/57 there may be a multiple for this i.e 40y/57y, here y is the multiple number other then x, can any one explain me about this, while doing cross multiplication it is important I think.

@Shalini I agree.

The question "What is Sumit's salary?" should be more clear.

-Is it Sumit's "present" salary?

-Or is it Sumit's "new" salary?

At first, I thought the question was asking for Sumit's "current" salary. The answer should be Rs. 34, 000.

But the given answer is Rs. 38, 000. That is Sumit's "new" salary (34, 000+4, 000) ("If" he got the raise) not Sumit's "present" salary as written in the explanation.

Question is what is salary of sumit not the new salary of sumit.

According to me right answer is 34000.

4000 should not be added because the question is if it increases, not increased. So, answer is 34000.

Hey, why can't we take Ravi's and Sumit's original salary as 1x and 2x respectively? Why only 2x and 3x?

Is there any shortcuts to solve this problem easily?

@Shikha.

Its just the new ratio. Read the question again and look at the 1st explanation til the 3rd step.

After that just divide 68000 by 6. You will get 33999 and it rounded of to 34000.

34000+4000 = 38000 which means 34000 was his old salary and aft increment of 4000 he gets 38000.

@Shikha.

40/57 is the new ratio. Read the question twice, you will get it.
