Salaries of Ravi and Sumit are in the ratio 2 : 3. If the salary of each is increased by Rs. 4000, the new ratio becomes 40 : 57. What is Sumit's salary?
Rs. 17,000
Rs. 20,000
Rs. 25,500
Rs. 38,000
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let the original salaries of Ravi and Sumit be Rs. 2x and Rs. 3x respectively.

Then, 2x + 4000 = 40
3x + 4000 57

57(2x + 4000) = 40(3x + 4000)

6x = 68,000

3x = 34,000

Sumit's present salary = (3x + 4000) = Rs.(34000 + 4000) = Rs. 38,000.

Thank you @Elumalai.

But I have a question that, why did you divide 6x=68000 by 2?
where did 2 come from?

Why is 57 on the side of 2 and 40 on the side of 3 is 2 greater than 3 in a 2:3 ratio?

R:S = 2x : 3x.
40:57cross {57*2:40*3} = 114:120.
(120-114)=6,
4000:4000cross{40*4000:57*4000} = 228000-160000 = 68000/6,
=11333.33333 * 3 = 34000 + 4000 = 38000.

@Basu.

Here;
6 represents the difference 4000.
Therefore 4000 ÷ 6*57=38000.

The ratio should be 38:55 not 40 : 57.

The ratio of students in class A and class B is 4:5. The ratio of the fee collected per student from class A and class B is 25:16. If the total fee collected is 81 lakh, what is the fee collected from class B. Can anyone solve this?

Roshan said:   6 years ago
I took it as 2/5(x)+4000 and 3/5(x)+4000.

Am I right?
