Discussion Forum : Problems on Ages - General Questions (Q.No. 1)
1.
Father is aged three times more than his son Ronit. After 8 years, he would be two and a half times of Ronit's age. After further 8 years, how many times would he be of Ronit's age?
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Let Ronit's present age be x years. Then, father's present age =(x + 3x) years = 4x years.
![]() |
(4x + 8) = | 5 | (x + 8) |
| 2 |
8x + 16 = 5x + 40
3x = 24
x = 8.
| Hence, required ratio = | (4x + 16) | = | 48 | = 2. |
| (x + 16) | 24 |

Let's Ronit present age be x.
Father's present age =3x.
After 8 yrs,
Ronits age = x+8.
Fathers age =3x+8.
3x+8=2.5(x+8)
X=24yrs.
Fathers age = 3x =3*24=72yrs
After a further 8 yrs,
Fathers age =72+8=80yrs,
Ronit's age=24+8=32yrs.
No.of times father age to Ronit age =80/32.
Then we get 2.5times(ans).
Father's present age =3x.
After 8 yrs,
Ronits age = x+8.
Fathers age =3x+8.
3x+8=2.5(x+8)
X=24yrs.
Fathers age = 3x =3*24=72yrs
After a further 8 yrs,
Fathers age =72+8=80yrs,
Ronit's age=24+8=32yrs.
No.of times father age to Ronit age =80/32.
Then we get 2.5times(ans).

@All.
Here father age is 3times so the last equation is wrong.

Why do we have to add 8 to 5/2 of x yet it was after 8 years?
So, 4x+8 =5x/2.
So, 4x+8 =5x/2.

It's only said his age would be 2.5 times of son's age after 8 years.
So only 2.5 * X seems logical. Why 2.5(X+8)? Explain it.

@Gauri.
Because 8 Years+ 8 Years =16 Years.

I think 3 times more than X means = 3X And three times less than X means = X/3.

Let fathers age be f and son age be s
given
f= 3s+s = 4s.
f + 8 = 2 * (s+8) = 5/2 (s+8).
So 4s +8 =5/2 (s+8)we get s=8, also f= 4*8 =32.
Let x times.
Given,
(f+16) = x(s+16)substitute f and s value,
we get x=2.
given
f= 3s+s = 4s.
f + 8 = 2 * (s+8) = 5/2 (s+8).
So 4s +8 =5/2 (s+8)we get s=8, also f= 4*8 =32.

we get x=2.
