The average age of husband, wife and their child 3 years ago was 27 years and that of wife and the child 5 years ago was 20 years. The present age of the husband is:
35 years
40 years
50 years
None of these
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Sum of the present ages of husband, wife and child = (27 x 3 + 3 x 3) years = 90 years.

Sum of the present ages of wife and child = (20 x 2 + 5 x 2) years = 50 years.

Husband's present age = (90 - 50) years = 40 years.

This is ramya from vizag,can i solve the problem as below as per question,
present ages of hus=h;wife=w;child=c;
---> 3 years ago it was said the avg ages of the hus,wife,child was 27 years.so,
((h-3)+(w-3)+(c-3))/3=27;
so solving it i got h+w+c=90;--->(a)
and given 5 years ago wife and childs age avg=20years so,
i took((w-5)+(c-5))/2=20;solving it i got w+c=50;-->(B)
on solving (a)&(b) i got h age as 40years,can this procedure be correct??
please do reply me?

Let age of husband, wife and child is x, y, z.

Then 3 year ago age of husband, wife and child was x-3, y-3, z-z.

Given that 3 year ago average of their age was 27.

So (x-3+y-3+z-3) /3 = 27.

=> x+y+z-9 = 81.

=> x+y+z = 90____ (1).

5 year ago age of wife and child was y-5 and z-5.

Given that 5 year ago average of their age was 20.

So (y-5+z-5)/2 = 20.

=> y+z-10 = 40.

=> y+z = 50_______ (2).

Now, (1) - (2).

=> x = 40.

So age of husband is 40.

Let husband present age - x.
Let wife present age - y.
Let son present age - z.

The average age of husband, wife and son before 3 years was 27.

i.e Before 3 year (x-3)+(y-3)+(z-3)/3 = 27.

x-3+y-3+z-3 = 27*3.
x+y+z = 81+9.
x+y+z = 90.....(1).

The average age of wife and son before 5 years was 20.

i.e Before 5 years (y-5)+(z-5)/2 = 20.

y-5+z-5 = 20*2.
y+z = 40+10.
y+z = 50....(2).

Now by subtracting equation 2 from equation 1, we will find x = 40.

@Renu

The solution for your problem:

Lets take the age of father 10 yrs ago as x.
Then rest of the 5 members 10 yrs ago as y.

Now the mean age 10 yrs ago is = (x + y)/6 --(1)

and now as father is dead and all the ages of the other 5 members has risen by 10 each.

So mean age now =(y + 5(10))/6 ---(2)

Equating (1) and (2): (x+y)/6 = (y+50)/6

Be solving the above, we get x = 50.

So present age when he died

= x + 10

= 60 yrs.

1. Av age of H+W+C=27.

Three years back their total age, we multiply 27 by 3 = 81 years.

Three years later age increased for three members = 3*3 = 9.

2. Current age of H+W+C = 90.

3. Av age of W+C = 20.

Five years back their total age, we multiply 20 by 2 = 40.

Five years later age increased for two members = 5*2 = 10.

4. Current age of W+C = 50.

5. Husband age = Current age of H+W+C-W+C = 90-50 = 40 years.

a)=(x+y+z)/3 = 27------> (1) given
=(x+y+z) =3*27=81------> (2) 3years back
=(x+y+z) =81+(3*3) =90------> (3) present age.

B) =(x+y) /2= 20------> (4) given
= (x+y) =2*20=40------> (5) 5years back age
= (x+y) =40+(5*2)=50------> (6) present age of wife and child.
= x+y+z =90
= 50+z=90
=90-50 = 40 = z------> Present husband age (Or)
eq-3 subtracting with 6 => 90-50 = 40 husband's present age.

Given that average age of husband, wife, child 3 years ago was 27 years
average age of wife child 5 years ago was 20 years.

h+w+c/3 = 27.
h+w+c = 81 it is 3 years ago this is eq1.

w+c = 40 it is 5 years ago then it is convert in to 3 years ago i.e adding 2*2 = 4 therefore w+c=44 eq2.

Eq1-eq2 we get h=37 this is 3 years age so add 3 years to get present age
answer is 40 years.

Ques- The average age of husband, wife and their child 3 years ago was 27 years and that of wife and the child 5 years ago was 20 years. The present age of the husband is:
, ...

Can anybody explain it easily. because i don't understand that why we took this condition - Sum of the present ages of husband, wife and child = (27 x 3 + 3 x 3) years = 90 years.

Seven years ago at the time of their marriage, the average age of a man and his wife was 28 years. At present, they have two children. Their daughter is 2 years older than their son. One year after the birth of the daughter, the average age of the man, wife and their daughter was 21 years, then the present age of the son is.

How do I solve this? Please help me.

The average of H, W, C = 27.
Total age 3 years ago = 27 × 3 = 81
and average of W, C = 20.
Total age 5 years ago = 20 × 2 = 40.

Convert to the present age equation.
(H-3) +( W -3)+ (C-3 )= 81.
H + W + C - 9 = 81
H + W + C = 90 ---> 1

(W-5) + (C - 5) = 40.
W + C - 10 = 40
W + C = 50 ---> 2.

Subtract to find H from equ 1 & 2.

Then H = 90 − 50 = 40.
