Directions to Solve
In each of the following questions there are three statements. Which are followed by three or four conclusions. Choose the conclusions which logically follow from the given statements.

2.

Statements: Some keys are staplers. Some staplers are stickers. All the stickers are pens.

Conclusions:

  1. Some pens are staplers.
  2. Some stickers are keys.
  3. No sticker is key.
  4. Some staplers are keys.

Only (1) and (2)
Only (2) and (4)

Its easy :

Option (1) & (4) follows no doubt about it, option (2) & (3) doesn't follow as per rules, so before quitting the question we must check whether there exist any COMPLEMENTARY PAIR (or) not.

SOME and NO forms a complementary pair with common words (STICKERS & KEYS), we can interchange the words because both SOME and NO are INTERCHANGEABLE. So we can write it as,

Some keys are stickers. No stickers are keys. [words (stickers) are same, so, either (2) or (3) follows].

Some keys are staplers. It means either 1 or 100 (all).

Keys may be stapler. Some staplers are stickers. Again it means either 1 or 100 (all) staplers are stickers. So we can say that all keys may be stickers. All the stickers are pens. So from above conclusion.

Either 1 or 100 (all) pen may be staplers. And either 0 or 100 (all).

Stickers may be key. So with statement 1 & 2, 3 statement is also right.

It can be explained easily with the help of venn diagram.

Latest and easiest method to solve any syllogism problems is Raval's notation.Just note down statements in Raval's notation and deduce the conclusions at a simple glance. Here statements are K - S, S - St, StSt - P conclusion 1 P - St is correct by reverse reading of StSt - P,conclusion 2 and conclusion 3 forms a complimentary pair so either of them must be true, conclusion 4 S - K is simply reverse of statement K - S

There is either 2 or 3 given because a complementary pair is a type in which both conclusions are not true at a time and are not false at the same time.

So, from both conclusions, one has to be true while the other has to be wrong. When the answer given like either 1 follows or 2 follows, it is a case of complimentary syllogism.

Only Conclusion 1 & 4 Follows but either 2 or 3 is incorrect.

As per the rule I can derive only two conclusion.

Some staplers are pens and some keys are staplers.

So conclusion we can conclude that 1. Some pens or staplers and 4. Some staplers are keys.

For an either-or statement one or both of the conclusions can be true from different possibilities. Option 3 is true from figure 1. Option 2 is true from other two figures. Hence we can compound the statement 'either 2 or 3' with 1 and 2 using 'and'.

By the rule that has been followed inthe previous sections, only option 1 and 4 is correct. Then why its coming to 2 or 3 as we have to conclude from all possible venn diagrams. So only option 1 and 4 is correct.

Guys, my point of view by the rule if I and E statement having same element as same place it can be taken as complementary pair and we select either or option. Complementary pairs are i, o; a, o and i, e.

Only 1 and 4 follow is correct. But either 2 or 3 is doubtful. Because there is another option that all sticker is key.

So, apart from 2 and 3, there is a 3rd possibility is there.
(1)

The answer is 1 and 4 and either 2 or 3 because 2 and 3 are a complimentary pair. In syllogisms, complimentary pairs too are a part of the answer key.
