Directions to Solve

In each of the following questions two statements are given and these statements are followed by two conclusions numbered (1) and (2). You have to take the given two statements to be true even if they seem to be at variance from commonly known facts. Read the conclusions and then decide which of the given conclusions logically follows from the two given statements, disregarding commonly known facts.

Give answer:

  • (A) If only (1) conclusion follows
  • (B) If only (2) conclusion follows
  • (C) If either (1) or (2) follows
  • (D) If neither (1) nor (2) follows and
  • (E) If both (1) and (2) follow.

9.

Statements: Some cows are crows. Some crows are elephants.

Conclusions:

  1. Some cows are elephants.
  2. All crows are elephants.

Only (1) conclusion follows
Only (2) conclusion follows

Friends syllogism is all about taking all the possibilities into consideration. So we will check whether statements 1 and 2 are following both the diagrams or not.

I have read all comments above. But I have still not able to understand the answer. Why D is correct?

If it says that all cows are crows then it is possible that some cows are elephants, hence, if some cows are crows then its lesser chances that some of them are elephants, I know it's not proper but that is how I cram it.:)

From the second diagram option 1 is going to be correct.

Can anyone please give the correct explanation and correct me if I'm wrong.

We have to consider the common conclusions of all possibilities (all the Venn diagrams). In this case, we got none. So, option D is correct.

I think option A is correct. Option B does not match with the 2nd figure.

I also think A is correct.

Some cows are elephants, that is what I inferred from the second diagram.

So should the answer not be option A?

No, D is correct. The clue is in the words order of the second statements. If the second statement is like "some elephant are crows",then option A is correct.
